Libertarians advocate the maximum amount of Personal and Economic Liberty, consistent with the defense of individual rights. Fiscally conservative yet socially tolerant, they favour lower taxes, free trade, individual rights and limited government

Enterprisers advocate a moderate amount of Personal and Economic Liberty, with "good" government programs. They usually support free markets and usually oppose restrictions on individual civil liberties

Centrists advocate compromise on all issues of Personal and Economic Liberty, prefering to avoid any partisan or principled positions (yeah right!). They tend to support any "middle-of-the-road" position between the "left-right" and "liberty-tyranny' political spectrums

Conservatives advocate a large amount of Economic Liberty, but favour a large government role in social issues. They usually support free markets, private enterprise, strong police powers and cultural norms in social behaviour

Liberals advocate a large amount of Personal Liberty, but favour a large government role in economic issues. They usually suport government economic regulations, income redistribution, police restraint and civil liberties

Statists advocate big government solutions to Personal and Economic issues, short of dictatorship (yeah right!). They tend to support any government program that increases controls over economic transactions or individual liberties

"Left-wingers" advocate the maximum limits on Economic Liberties and the minimum limits on Personal Liberty. They support any government controls on economic markets and oppose all controls on social liberties

"Right-wingers" advocate the maximum limits on Personal Liberties and the minimum limits on Economic Liberty. They support any government controls on social liberties and oppose all controls on economic liberties

Authoritarians advocate strong government restrictions on both economic and social issues (the opposite of Libertarian principles). They favour government ownership of property, restricted markets, a strong police force and social conformity

I'd guess I'm a statist (but one who orientates towards the centre, on social issues, and towards liberals, on economic issues, rather than towards the authoritarians or conservatives)

Is there a test for this nonsense? Since no definition fits correctly anyways, might as well have a test to blame.

I don't know if there is an actual test per se. I only found these ideological "labels" doing a google search looking for Senator ratings for 2004. From what I can gather, they look at how they vote and then categorise them accordingly

Still, I think most of us on the Forum will have some idea where they might fit Wink

I think that I fit best somewhere in between Enterpriser and Libertarian since I'm not as moderate as an Enterpriser but I am more rational than their definition of a Libertarian.

Pete Domenici, Republican  p: 68 e: 83 c: 75.9
Arlen Specter, Republican  p: 74 e: 78 c: 75.8

Arlen is too extreme for you, Colin? Er...
From the accompanying graph, the four semimoderate descriptions are pretty thin wedges between the moderate diamond in the center and the extremist triangles in the corners, so I guess I'm a left-winger for them, not a liberal. Good.

Do you know where the test is, Don? It would be interesting to see whether I've correctly identified myself as a statist

To me it simply looks like the standard Political Compass divided into a 3x3 grid:

Authoritarian         Conservative         Right-Winger
Statist                    Centrist                 Enterpriser
Left-Winger            Liberal                   Libertarian

Statist                    Centrist                 Enterpriser

Yes

On the www.issues2000.org test, I'm defined as a moderate liberal populist, which makes me more or less centre-left so I'm likely to be a statist but leaning towards the centre or liberal zones rather than the authoritarian or conservative ones

Basically, most tests I've done characterise me as being economically left-of-centre, while socially centrist to centre-right. On foreign policy, my philosophy is realist - as opposed to liberal, isolationist or neo-conservative

Conservative - maybe a bit of enterpriser thrown in.

There could be 150 different tests and most of us would get a different result and a different label from each one (depending upon the test, the time of day, the news, gas, Iraq, whether or not the coffee was too strong or weak, what the Power Rankings look like, and everything else), but these are still fun, and the definition isn't far off from me at all. First, take the World's Smallest Political Quiz here: http://www.self-gov.org/quiz.html . Then go here http://www.republicanliberty.org/libdex/libergraph.htm and look at the Chart and match your posistion from the Quiz to the chart.
