How would you have voted if only third parties were on the ballot? Here's mine:

1988: Ron Paul (Libertarian)
1992: Ross Perot (Independant)
1996: Ross Perot (Reform)
2000: Pat Buchanan (Reform)

2004: Michael Peroutka (Constitution)
2008: Chuck Baldwin (Constitution)
2012: Virgil Goode (Constitution)
2016: Darrell Castle (Constitution)

1968- Eldridge Cleaver (Peace and Freedom)
1972- Benjamin Spock (People's)
1976- Eugene McCarthy (Independent)
1980- John Anderson (Independent)

1984- Sonia Johnson (Citizens)
1988- Lenora Fulani (New Alliance)
1992- Ross Perot (Independent)
1996- Ross Perot (Reform)

2000- John Hagelin (Natural Law)
2004- David Cobb (Green)
2008- Ralph Nader (Independent)
2012- Rocky Anderson (Justice)
2016- Even McMullin (Independent) or Gary Johnson (Libertarian) depending on the location.

The bolded ones are the only votes I'd have at least meagre enthusiasm for.

Actual first choices in bold. Needless to say, some would be very unenthusiastic votes, especially in time periods where I'm basically picking between prohibitionists and socialists. I get more enthusiastic about 3rd parties when there is a good 3rd party around, like Free Soil, National Democratic, or Libertarian.

(no 3rd parties prior to 1836)
1836 William Wirt (AM)
1840 no 3rd parties that year
1840 James Birney (L)
1844 James Birney (L)

1848 Martin Van Buren (FS)
1852 John Hale (FS)

1856 Gerrit Smith (NL)
1860 John Bell (CU)
1864 no 3rd parties that year
1868 no 3rd parties that year
1872 Charles O'Conor (BD)
1876 Peter Cooper (GB)
1880 John Phelps (AM)
1884 Benjamin Butler (GB)
1888 Clinton Fisk (Prohib)
1892 James Weaver (Pop)
1896 John Palmer (ND)
1900 Edward Emerson (N)

1904 Thomas Watson (Pop)
1908 Thomas Hisgen (Independence)
1912 ...am I allowed to vote William H. Taft here? If so, him
1916 Frank Hanly (Prohib)
1920 Robert Macauley (ST)
1924 Robert La Follette (Prog)
1928 Norman Thomas (S)
1932 William Harvey (Liberty)
1936 Norman Thomas (S)
1940 Roger Babson (Prohib)
1944 Claude Watson (Prohib)

1948 Henry Wallace (Prog)
1952 Douglas MacArthur (C)
1956 ...ugh, can I skip this one?...
1960 J. Bracken Lee (Conservative)
1964 Joseph Lightburn (C)
1968 Pat Paulsen (I)
1972 John Hospers (L)

1976 Eugene McCarthy (I)
1980 Ed Clark (L)
1984 David Bergland (L)
1988 Ron Paul (L)

1992 Ross Perot (Ref)
1996 Harry Browne (L)
2000 Harry Browne (L)
2004 Michael Badnarik (L)
2008 Bob Barr (L)
2012 Gary Johnson (L)

For presidential:
Woodhull/Douglas
SLP until Debs
Debs till 1920
CPUSA till 1928
Yippie/weed party remnants in the 80s and 90s
Nader till 2004
PSL thereafter till 2020

I am not wasting my time with voting during the worst of the electoral red scare when it was clear federal elections were worthless. I’m also not wasting my vote on the Browderized CPUSA, cold warrior Norman, SWP (sorry Camejo), or grand alliance nonsense the P&F party did. I am on the fence about voting for the Liberty party or abstaining given how little democracy actually mattered in the US until after the Civil War, only to be rendered mute by reconstruction being unjustly ended and entering the controlled duopoly till the latter end of the 19th century.

I am on the fence about voting for the Liberty party or abstaining given how little democracy actually mattered in the US until after the Civil War, only to be rendered mute by reconstruction being unjustly ended and entering the controlled duopoly till the latter end of the 19th century.

no love for the swp?  Sad
Anyone good left that cr@phouse over the course of decades of its existence.

fair but it was based at least for a little while. and i think most of the presidential candidates have been much better than the party leadership
