By Deep South I mean SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, and AR.

Democrats swept these states from 1880 to 1964 (I consider Strom Thurmond 1948 a Democrat). The only reasonably close calls were 1928 AL (2.84% D win, D+20.26), 1952 SC (1.52% D win, D+12.42), and 1960 SC (2.48% D win, D+2.65).

Given the PVI's in 1928 and 1952 and the fact that they were both Republican landslides, I don't know how attainable those states were. Nixon probably could've won SC in 1960 with more of a push though.

Yes this. Ike won the state 53-39% that year. Minus 1928 and 1952, In 1876 Hayes won the states of South Carolina and Louisiana off the backs of freed blacks though by mysterious circumstances, Grant in 1872 won all those deep south states minus Georgia, he won Alabama,Arkansas, and South Carolina in 1868 due to reconstruction, and in 1864 the reconstructed portions of Louisiana voted for Lincoln over the Democrat.
