Like how Freudenthal picked Barrasso in WY?

I suppose so. If the people elected a liberal Democrat as their Senator, the replacement should at least be a Democrat. Someone like Christie, who is hated and almost out of office should not be able to appoint someone who is the polar opposite of what the people last chose. Likewise, in a state like Wyoming, appointing a Democrat to a vacant Senate seat doesn't really make sense given that it's highly unlikely the people would ever make that choice themselves. If the last Senator was a conservative, the replacement should be a conservative. Obviously I disagree with the ideology but it only makes sense to maintain a little consistency.

Can any of our esteemed New Jersey posters give me a rundown on good Democratic replacements for Menendez? Call me too quick to judge, but when I think of New Jersey politicians, I automatically assume that they're all just as crooked as Bribery Bob.

Not from NJ but Jim Johnson, the Wiz, and Rush all seem clean

Frank Pallone is fairly blatantly opportunistic and not very well-liked, but he has no real red marks on his record for corruption. Might be more that he's a lot better at it than most, but he seems clean.

If Menendez is convicted between now and the inauguration of Governor Murphy, could Christie appoint Guagdano? It would be a great consolation prize for losing the Governor's race.

Not clean but Torricelli really wants to be a senator again.

Menedez won't be removed while Christie is Governor, even if he's convicted.

There's been a falling out between the two, so I kind of doubt it. If he wants someone who could keep the seat competitive in 2018, then former Rep. Mike Ferguson is probably the best bet. Note that I said "could keep it competitive" and not "could hold it" though.

One of the jurors in the case had to ask the judge what a Senator is.

Seems to be going well.

Whats even funnier is the judge didn't even answer their question.

Loretta Weinberg would be the dream Senator (she's long been the most anti-machine politician on the Democratic side of the aisle in the legislature), though she's now likely too old (82) for the job on a permanent basis. Might be interesting as a compromise pick to fill the seat since she probably wouldn't run for election.

Jury deliberation will start over again on Monday if no verdict is reached by the end of Thursday.

Again, Jury, just find him guilty. This shouldn't be hard.

I wonder if the Menendez stuff may have dragged down Murphy a bit.

It did not. If your thinking about Murphy's margin in any other context then "low Turnout" then your over thinking it.

No verdict released today. One jury member is being replaced with an alternate, so deliberations will start over on Monday.

I feel like jurors aren't really allowed to do that...
