1924, would have voted for LaFolette because both the D and R-candidate were right-wingers. In 1928, I would have reluctantly voted for Smith. Dem in every election after other than 1952 and perhaps 1976 (definitely Ford with hindsight, without I dunno).

1924 (LaFolette)

I would have considered or actually preferred John Anderson in 1980, though would have voted for Carter for tactical reasons. At least in battleground states.
