Joe Biden miraculously defeats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to win the Democratic Presidential nomination, and selects Obama as his running mate. Like in real life John McCain is the Republican nominee, but he selects Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle as his running mate, instead of Sarah Palin, as a way of neutralizing Biden's lead among female voters.

Everything else is the same.

Does a different Democratic nominee, and a different running mate for McCain help change the election?

I'd like to know how McCain wins California in this scenario...does the Biden campaign fall asleep at the switch or something?

This, except I think Biden wins California, Nevada and Florida, Lingle being on the ticket probably isn't enough to win McCain Hawaii, and he may win Arkansas too, so I'd predict:

Joe Biden/Barack Obama: 398 EVs
John McCain/Laura Lingle: 140 EVs
