I don't the country was ready for a black president at that time. Obama is certainly more charismatic than John Kerry. Republicans would paint him as a liberal out of touch elite like they did with Kerry.

A state senator would never have come close to the nomination. Maybe if he was elected Congressman or Senator?

No one was going to beat Bush in 04 just a few years after 9/11. In hindsight it's remarkable Democrats were so convinced it was a winnable election. Kerry did about as well as was possible.

Nah, just flip OH and Kerry/the Democrat wins, even without the PV (would have been intersting if W won 2000 without the PV and then lost 2004 with the PV). 2004 was winnable. In Kerry's position, I would have picked General Wesley Clark as my running mate to gain more national security expertise on the ticket, similar what Obama did when he chose Joe Biden.

President George Bush (R-TX) / Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY) ✓
State Senator and Fmr. Community Organizer Barack Obama (D-IL) / Senator Joe Biden (D-DE)

No chance for State Senator Obama in the immediate post-9/11 hysteria.

POTUS George W. Bush/VPOTUS Dick Cheney 58% 514 EV

State Senator Barack Obama/Senator Hillary Clinton 40% 24 EV

Hillary becomes the frontrunner in 2008, and wins the nomination and general election after the economy collapses.
