looking at the voting history of people like T.Roosevelt, and Millard Fillmore, it seems to be the former presidents dont have an automatic ticket to success if they run as independents. is the opposition to 3rd parties that strong, or are thet just seen as quacks by then

Seeing that TR, Van Buren, and Filmore all ran under extreme parties (and they were for the time they were in) then that is why they did not win.

Do't forget that they all did well. All garnered 10% of the vote or higher, and all but Van Buren won electoral votes.

TR won 88 EV's.

what if Carter, Ford, Bush, or Clinton were to run (if they could) for "3rd parties" though.

TR's 27% was tbe highest popular vote percentage by far for any third party candidate ever.  Ours is a two party system.  Third party candidates simply do not do well here.  Carter, Ford and Bush all were defeated for reelection, and would do poorly as third party candidates, even if they were younger.  If the 22nd ammendment were repealed, Clinton would do just as poorly if the Dems wouldn't nominate him and he had to run with a 3rd party.

Second best 3rd party showing:  Millard Fillmore, 1856, 21%.

Third-parties cannot do well because of dualism.
