Most immigrants come on family visas. It is a fact that these immigrants are an economic drain on the system. If they assimilated properly, it might be an acceptable investment, but even with family in the country, they generally assimilate poorly.

This is a sure way to cripple the U.S. economy in the long term.  The birth rate is declining and the population is aging. Immigrants and their children are expected to offset this and make up an increasing share of the working-age population.

You're willfully ignorant.

The second link doesn't even say that immigrants are necessary for the workforce. Just that they will be a large part of it because they are here. So if they aren't here, they won't be a large part of it. It basically just says "the immigrant population is growing". We have to grow the immigrant population because the immigrant population is growing?

Most American immigration is charity. Full stop.

The immigrants get richer. The people already here get poorer.

If these immigrants are such a boon to the economy, why did they have to immigrate in the first place? Why are their countries of origin so poor?

Why does coming to America suddenly make them so profitable?

The answer is, it doesn't. They simply get richer because when they come here and have children, they qualify for benefits paid for by the American tax payer.

It should not be an imperative that US taxpayers have to continue giving out charity like this.

Surprisingly, immigrants also pay taxes. I know it's a difficult concept to grasp, but nonwhites are also people, and they pay taxes. Meaning they also qualify for benefits.

I wonder what Trump's reply to that might be...

Many pay no federal income tax because of a combination of low wages and the child tax credit. Such people take more in benefits than they pay.

Again, it should not be a moral imperative that the any country be forced to take on such dependents.

This is the entirety of the pro-immigration argument: If you oppose bringing in millions of poor people, you must hate brown people.

The sad thing is, it's largely winning. Mostly because corporate interests who want cheap labor control the media.

This thread is really rich in how the children, or grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of immigrants are believing that all of the sudden these new immigrants are a burden and a strain on the economy.

Really interesting, isn't it? Must've been nice that your relatives had immigrated fifty, or one hundred, or two hundred years ago. They were real hard workers, way different from the lazy moochers coming in today, right?

Oh, I know the difference! It's the color of their skin, isn't it?

This is a racist, White Supremacist lie. Most of the legal immigrants are Super highly educated, highly paid people who are responsible for survival of the American economy. They get 0 Welfare, they pay high taxes & they pay into Social Security & they get 0 $ out of it because many of them will likely never get citizenship.

Medicare, Social Security etc are in a demographic disaster & are solvent partly due to huge contribution from high paying legal immigrants. These immigrants including the likes of Nadella, Microsoft CEO, Pichai, Google CEO run large companies which employ huge people. Some of them also are entrepreneurs which create huge employment.

But yea let's lie with the KKK White Supremacist arguments !

100 years ago immigrants weren't mooching because we didn't have any social programs to mooch off. That's the difference.

Social programs were created in the 30s after we mostly stopped taking in new immigrants.

The Natives who were originally from the country were slaughtered in mass genocide. They were worse than slaves. Their women were raped, their homes & food were taken & they were brutally punished, hands were chopped off if need be & they were slaves. 100's of 1000's of Native borns died.

This is why idiots in this forum keep posting shi* because they have no idea about history. Columbus' own diary documents many of these facts. And these dumb f**k Natives welcomed the immigrants with open arms, gave them food, shelter & care & got slaughtered. Now that black/brown people are coming in greater increased numbers vis-a-vis white people, hey let's stop legal immigration.

You really can't tell the difference between today and the 19th century? There is no sparsely populated western lands in need of settlers, there are no newly opened factories desperate for workers. We are entering an age where automation will do away with more and more forms of labor, and we'll struggle to find employment for our own citizens, so there is no need to continue to bring in large numbers of unskilled immigrants anymore. Different times call for different policies. And a poem written on a statue is not a part of the Constitution or US law.

Immigrants get 0 welfare? Then why are people outraged that Trump is taking away immigrants ability to get Medicaid and Food Stamps? Or is your argument, "immigrants don't get welfare because any tax payer funded benefits they get it, I choose not to call welfare"?

Also, I literally thought you were posting ironically and in support of immigration restriction at first. Your points are that bad. Do you really think the CEO of Google is representative of the immigrants we take in?

and Google can continue to employ Americans even if they have an America born CEO. I don't know why they wouldn't be able to.

There are, however, scores of tech firms in dire need of highly skilled immigrants. Obviously there aren't enough of those here.

Also, the phrase "our own citizens" is frankly ridiculous. Any legs immigrant can theoretically become a citizen. Why does it matter if the citizen was born here or naturalized?

My immigrant mother is just as much of an American citizen as you or me.

Immigrants today aren't more damaging to the economy than immigrants 50 years ago. Immigrants 50 years ago were just as damaging. That's why the real value of wages has been going down and wealth inequality has been going up continuously since 1965.

Hart-Celler was good in some ways, that it ended preferential treatment based on race. It was mostly harmful though because it totally blew the doors to immigration wide open. Most of the people we have taken in since then have been poor (obviously, if you're already rich in your own country, you have less reason to move) and thus a net drain on the economy.

Okay, so now immigrants are the sole reason real wages have dropped, they're the cause of wealth inequality. What else do we want to blame on the bogeyman of "scary foreigners"?

So far most the people calling for more immigration have resorted to calling people "racist" and appeals to emotion "think of the children," while one has actually come out and said they do in fact want to replace white people demographically to win elections.

You have no legitimate argument. Technology is doing away with more and more forms of labor, so bringing in more unskilled immigrants does not help us. Constantly trying to grow our population through immigration will cause housing prices to rise, will depress wages, and will damage our environment. All things the left used to care about, but now they don't because importing future voters all so their rich masters can profit from the cheap labor is more important.

Unskilled? Unskilled?

You do realize that most legal immigrants are skilled, right? Such as my dad, or Kamala's parents. And these skilled immigrants play important roles at universities and the private sector.

But it doesn't matter.

Nothing will change your (or Mortimer's) mind.

Nothing will change your preconceived notion that the standard immigrant is some lazy welfare mooch or secret terrorist.

Nothing will change your opinion that the Chinese Exclusion Act or the anti-immigrant acts of the 1920s were the best thing before and after sliced bread.

And nothing will disabuse you of the notion that me or Kamala are anything but scum just because of our immigrant backgrounds.

You have literally been unable to refute any economics based argument against immigration that anyone in this thread has made.

You just call people racist.

The only person calling for race based immigration policies is the person who said he thinks it's a good idea to make America less white.

Oh, I know the difference! It's the color of their skin, isn't it?

You really can't tell the difference between today and the 19th century? There is no sparsely populated western lands in need of settlers, there are no newly opened factories desperate for workers. We are entering an age where automation will do away with more and more forms of labor, and we'll struggle to find employment for our own citizens, so there is no need to continue to bring in large numbers of unskilled immigrants anymore. Different times call for different policies. And a poem written on a statue is not a part of the Constitution or US law.

Unskilled?

My position is we should bring in skilled immigrants to fill a skills shortage. There are numerous examples of companies abusing the h1b visa system to replace a qualified US citizen with a cheaper foreign worker who is then tied to the company. And you are so full of it to claim that immigrants from latin america are mostly skilled workers.
