I've heard about him in 2012 when he unseated a crazy Republican incumbent, and quickly forgot all about until now.

Guys who live near the beltway, like O'Malley, Delaney, and McAuliffe, have heads pumped up full of ambition due to the atmosphere around here. We think we're the sh**t, but we ain't. In fact, except for our influence over the bureaucracy, this is one of the most powerless regions in the country. Still, I respect him for sticking his neck out. Better than cowards.

Aside from having memorized the name of every member of the House of Representatives because I was bored, I vaguely remember him deciding not to run for Senate when Mikulski retired. That's about it.

Yes(Atlas member).

I thought he might run for Governor, or maybe even primary Cardin.

The Republican was Roscoe Bartlett.  Bartlett is a 'survivalist' but I wouldn't call him crazy.  I thought he made good points on occasion.

The only reason I've heard of John Delaney is because he was only narrowly reelected in 2014.

Who knows if he even winds up running for President.  If I'm not mistaken it was around this same juncture in the last cycle when Pete King said he was going to run for President in 2016.

Yeah, I knew of him, not much else besides the name though, and confusing him with Hoyer on occasions.

IIRC, Peter King's "announcement" was kind of an offhand remark that he immediately started walking back.  In contrast, Delaney has a website that says he's running for president.  It says "Paid for and Authorized by Friends of John Delaney".  So I guess my question is "What is 'Friends of John Delaney'?"  Has Delaney already filed with the FEC as a presidential candidate?

I don't think so. I might've seen him mentioned as a potential opponent to Hogan in 2018.

I remember in 2014 when he randomly almost lost reelection in what should have been a safe race.

Yes, but solely because of his embarrassing 2014 performance.

You mean Maryland 2014, in which Democrats barely campaigned and the Republicans organized a massive ground team?

As I've said before, Hogan won MD-06 by 15 points and it easily could have flipped. In fact it's possible another Dem incumbent would have likely lost it. It's just an unfair knock against Delaney to criticize him for this. I take it you blame Louise McIntosh Slaughter for coming within 872 votes of losing in 2014 too?

Well, Louise McIntosh Slaughter nearly lost because people these days prefer Red Delicious.

To the OP, do you mean aware of his existence before he signaled that he's running for President or before he got elected?

I was aware of him before the presidential announcement but not before he got elected. I remember reading some article from a few years ago about how Bill Clinton was endorsing Democrats who had supported Hillary in 2008 over those who had backed Obama when it came to the member-vs-member primaries following redistricting (like Pascrell vs. Rothman in NJ-09 and Sherman vs. Berman in CA-26 when he backed Pascrell and Sherman, Hillary supporters, over Rothman and Berman, who were Obama guys). Delaney raised lots of money for Hillary in 2008 whereas the person he was running against was an Obama supporter, I think.

That's how I know of him.

Yes, but I've never considered him anything beyond a backbencher with no future besides a handful of terms. All I know is that he beat Bartlett and Bongino really.
