- WWC Upbringing, dad was union electrician.
- Self-made, unlike Trump who inherited Delaney founded 3 successful companies
- Can self-fund a few million in small states like IA, NH could put him on voters radars.

I don't know about his charisma or debate chops but I wouldn't count out John Delaney.

As a son of a Union Electrician (IBEW FOR LIFE!), this does indeed intrigue me.

His problem is that he's even more of a D.C. suburb guy than Tim Kaine was, and resentment of D.C. is an ever-present factor in American politics. Especially with Trump trying to cast himself as an outsider and his opponents as "the swamp". I know my place; my region is here to supply submissive bureaucrats, not national politicians.

Has he been a public figure for over 30 years like Donald Trump has?

Delaney is more of a DC suburb guy since Delaney is actually from the DC suburbs, Kaine has lived in Richmond, Va for his whole adult life and lived out West before that

If you're looking for a self-made millionaire with a working-class background who happens to be the son of a union member, Richard Sherman also fits the bill

Resume doesn't matter. Preparation, skill, vision, and charisma do.

A Rep trying to jump to President doesn't strike me as particularly indicative of skill.

Announcing out of the blue literally a year and a half early doesn't strike me as indicative of preparation.

His interview, in which he chose to dive into the weeds of infrastructure funding, doesn't indicate charisma or vision.

I'm not exactly rarin' to knock doors for him in New Hampshire.

Generic Democrat always performs well in the polls and he's about as "Generic Democrat" as you can get, so that's worth something (?)

He won't be old enough until 2024.

If you use an "a" in "definitely," you are definitely an a-hole. Smiley

I wouldn't rule him out so quick for a cabinet position, maybe labor secretary. He's a very capable politician, and if by some miracle he won, he'd probably do a decent job. But I don't see a path to the nomination for John Delaney. He won't do nearly as bad as Thad Cotter, though.

Cons

- is regarded as a joke by anyone who knows anything about Maryland politics
- almost got wiped out in 2014 in a Likely D district by a lunatic who only got 24% of the vote in his Senate bid
- dull, boring, incoherent

Not entirely disagreeing with you obviously but Hogan won the seat by 15 points and it definitely could have elected a Republican with only minor PODs, given just how intensely R 2014 was, especially in Maryland.

He's gonna make Jim Webb look like a competitive candidate.

He was never going to win them in the first place. The guy won his seat through gerrymandering; if Maryland (hopefully) decides to draw fair, accurate districts in 2020, Delaney's going to find himself in a tight spot, holding onto a very, very Republican district. He would probably be the only Democratic congressman to lose his seat when redistricting comes, however.

I dont see dems doing redistricting reform if anything we need a better gerrymander to eliminate Harris.  Its time to fight fire with fire, also you could probably draw a non gerrymandered md-6 thats still competitive

He's certainly at a disadvantage being a representative, especially as one who no one expected to run. However, to make up for the lost time of people researching him during the "thinking about it stage," it was smart to launch his campaign early to build up recognition in a formal campaign setting.

But yeah there are still a lot of questions about him, specifically on the issues he supports. I assume he's just a generic liberal, but I'd like to read more about the issues he supports to see which groups he could attract in the primaries.
