As I noted in the Tea Leaves thread:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=233345.msg5757252#msg5757252

a "source with knowledge of his plans" actually said that he's going to announce this weekend in a WaPo op/ed.  I would say it's a little early to be formally launching presidential campaigns, so I'll believe it when I see it.  Though maybe he's going to announce a PAC, or some kind of testing the waters committee.

While current/former house members don't usually get much traction in presidential primaries, Delaney did go straight from the private sector to the US House of Representatives, so that checks him off as a relative outsider, though he could still be attaked for being an insider because he's from Montgomery County.

I just found a picture of him, and he looks like a character in a movie that's a former president who's always referred to as "the previous guy," and has become wildly unpopular in retirement. Then he gets indicted and by the end he winds up in jail.

But, you know, looks can be deceiving or whatever.

This will be a bigger failure than Chafee, but I support his candidacy anyway.

Can someone give a short rundown of his...
  • experience
  • policy positions
  • overall standing on political spectrum
  • any major scandals or noticeable flaws?
  • personality/demeanor?

He's a fiscal moderate/former banker in an increasingly progressive party, he looks like a potato, represents a weird district that he almost lost in 2014, and like no one knows who he is.

clearly a winner here.

If he actually announces this weekend, he'll at least get a few news stories written about him, for being the member of Congress weird enough to announce his presidential candidacy two and a half years before the Iowa caucuses.  Whereas if he waits until 2019, then he'll get no media attention whatsoever.  So the political incentive here is obvious.  Tongue

So we already have the makings of an overflow debate. Nice.
