My political compass scores and the new chart on the forum (where I am further to the right than a lot of Republicans)  has got me thinking. Am I a DINO, Democrat In Name Only?

1. I have a centre-right Political Compass Score and according to On the Issues, my two closest matches are Gordon Smith and Olympia Snowe.

2. I 'idolise' Nixon, Rockefeller and Goldwater.

3. I think mulitculturalism is a complete sham and that even 'moderate' Islam is incompatible with western society and should be monitored.

4. I think private companies should run specialist schools and that the taxation system unfairly favours the 'poor' over the middle class.

Yet...

1. I really, really, REALLY, dislike George W Bush and the Christian Right.

2. I support gay marriage and legalised prostitution.

3. I also idolise Bill Clinton, John Kerry and JFK.

4. I am strongly opposed to the death penalty, even for utter bast**ds.

Help me! Maybe I should be changing my avatar Sad

you seem like, from your posts to be libertarian leaning.  You seem to dislike government in certain areas and possibly want it to get out of these issues.  You could become libertarian, possibly.  We'd be glad to have another on this forum.  Although, I don't think there's a yellow British avatar Sad   Green avatar's the next best I suppose...

You are whatever you say you are.

But you should give both parties a good look.  You idolize Republicans of the past who may not really fit in with the party today, but what do you think of the current day Democratic party?

On balance, it seems you lean slightly toward the Democrats, but are not part of the lunatic fringe.  Still, you're definitely not a DINO, in my opinion.

Thanks! Someone else said that about me I'm sure. South Park is a good show that behind all the crude humour actually tackles important issues of the day and I tend to agree with Matt and Trey's 'editorial' line I guess Smiley

If the Republicans nominate a moderate and the Dems an uberliberal in 2008, I would probably back the Republican candidate. If its Brownback, Santorum or Frist however I think i'll remain in the Democratic camp for a while yet!

No, you're not even a DINO, at least a DINO is an actual voter.  You're either a child or a foreigner who, like most children and most foreigners, sympathizes with the Democrats.  Calling you a Dino would be like calling me a member of the PDF (a german party I like, but since I'm not eligible to vote in Germany I wouldn't even be a PDFino).  I'm a typical South Park Republican, if you're looking for an example of that.

Carl's the quintessential DINO, if you want an example of that.  Probably the most perfect example imaginable.

simply put, the mindset seems to be

GOP:  If the adult Americans like them, they must be assholes.

Not that it hurts the GOP in a practical way, since you must be both adult and American to vote here, but it's kinda frustrating to continually explain that it's okay even if the other children and foreigners don't think you're cool, but can't quite accurately and intelligently explain why.

all kidding aside, it's okay to be a conservative democrat.  most of the democrats are know are far more traditionalistic than I.  The bottom line here is that to be a republican you must be nationalistic, which, by virtue of the very philosophy, requires that you've attained social maturity and that you are a citizen with a stake in the nation.  Chirac's coalition is a good analogy for something like the GOP, but constrained by the culture of different country.  I'm not sure your country has a good analogy, actually.  Doesn't really seem to.  Anyway, if you're not a republican, then you're either a Democrat (in all likelihood), or something else or none of the above (less probable).  It's anybody's guess what you'd be if you were an American.  Don't let the fact that you like Nixon think that makes you a blue avatar kind of guy.  I think the bastard was creepy, his Southern Strategy was sleazy, and that he was a general scumbag.  And don't let the fact that you "idolize" Clinton make you a Democrat.  (It just makes you a weirdo).  I voted for Clinton in 1992 and in 1996 and I think that makes me no less a South Park republican.  It just means that Bush's daddy and Dole really suck.  Nothing more.

Well i'm 21, and yes I'm foreign and i'm a university student studying American politics amongst others, so it's more than gut instinct that makes me 'side' with the Dems Smiley

Not really.  Chances are you're getting a slanted view, and Democrat views are particularly attractive to those who have not had a chance to test them in the real world and discover that they don't work very well.

The Democratic Party and the Republican Party are only names, they have nothing to do with your political views, so everyone is either a RINO or a DINO, (or a third party/independent, of course.)

That is an outstanding post, grasshopper.  profound.  inaccurate, of course, but a major step toward enlightenment for sure.  I can say no more, except that you are now ready.

I could even pass myself off as a Democrat if I really wanted to.  I may be somewhat close to Democratic positions on one or two issues, like mass transit maybe, or favoring CAFE standards for automobiles.  You can be whatever you want to be.  Nobody purely follows the positions of one party.
