Actually, Dwayne Johnson was a Republican. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that he had switched his party registration to Independent, with the strong implication that it may have been because of Trump's presidency.

Here is a rather lenghty profile by the GQ from this May which mentions his party switch and discusses his political views:

When asked about his assessment of Trump he said:

I feel like usually economic policy is the best indicator of where someone stands (of course not always). Anything on how he feels about taxes, etc.?

I wouldn't count on it, since he's usually described as being rather reserved in expressing his political views. The statements from this May's GQ article were perhaps some of the most outspoken political statements he ever made.

I don't think the Rock would beat Trump in the GOP primary unless the economy goes south or if more scandals plague Trump's administration. The Republican base still likes Trump a lot as far as I can tell.

If the Rock runs against Trump in the general election I think he could win. I think the Rock would win Florida. He played football at the University of Miami and from what I understand he is popular in that state. I could see higher minority turnout helping the Rock win Florida and maybe some Obama states that Clinton lost.
