Why are the Republican states blue and the Democratic states red on this site?

I’m not Stu:
Because most countries use red for liberal and blue for conservative.

Virtually nowhere uses red for "liberal" Canada is the only country I can think of where red is for the liberals

Liberals are normally some shade of yellow/orange or blue

By a charitable interpretation, red for left and blue for right is pretty universal. In countries where the liberal party isn't the main leftwing force liberals aren't coloured red.

Canada's Liberal party is much more like the Labour party of the UK than a 'liberal party'.

IceAgeComing:
...in that they're coloured red and (currently) the main non-Tory party in their countries, sure.  In literally every other way they are totally different - the Liberals are a liberal party, and Labour are a socialist one in terms of tradition at least, which is a major different that causes them to act totally different to each other.
