I assume everybody in this forum can name all states on a map.

When you learned all the U.S. states by heart - be it as a high school student or as an Americanist - which was the last state that burned into your mind? Which state do you still have the most problems with?

I figure as long as I don't mix up North and South Dakota, North and South Carolina, or Virginia and West Virginia, I'll be alright.

I always mixed up Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

When looking at a blank map, I couldn't name Missouri for a long time.

Same. And honestly if it weren't for my political (electoral maps) and weather interests I probably still would.

I still mix up Alabama and Mississippi. It's really unfortunate that they're pretty close mirror images of each other and share a large border.

FWIW: There is a good memory hook for the Southern states: In Germany we have a magazine for lesbians called L-MAG. Tongue

NH and VT

Never had a problem with MS and AL because I knew where the Mississippi river went.

I used to mix up Arizona and Nevada. But the state that is to me the most forgettable is Arkansas. Ironically, this is one of the first State I ever heard of, because of the USS Arkansas, which was the American flagship in one of my first RTS. Anyway, I couldn't place Arkansas on a map for the longest time. It has a sh**tty shape. And I still know nothing about it apart from the fact that Bill Clinton somehow came from there, and the Little Rock integration crisis. I genuinely think that Arkansas is the worst state, and the most forgettable of all the 50. Also, it doesn't even rhyme with Kansas.

Arkansas is the only State that makes me sad and even depressed when thinking about it.

By the time I was in 5th Grade, we had a test of correctly identifying every State, and I scored 50/50.

Some of that was extensive cross-country travels to visit relatives on the "East Coast", and a lot of that was a bizarre obsession that I had with US Politics and Elections that went back 3-4 years before.

If I had to pick the "hardest state" I would probably imagine that NH/VT were at the top of the list at that time, and both were states I had not visited at that time in my life, and are slight inversions.
