New Jersey's state government could close in 15 minutes, Saturday, July 1, 2017, over the failure of the State Legislature and Gov. Chris Christie to agree over FY2018 budget over Horizon Blue Shield of NJ, NJ's largest health care provider.

True, but post-Christie, Jon Bramnick could rebuild the party if he runs against Menendez next year.

Bramnick could do well with minority voters.

To be fair, not all of them have been disasters (assuming you're referring to GOP governors nationwide, not just in New Jersey history). I think the Republican governors of Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, and, arguably, Ohio, have been fairly good.

CT isn't far behind, and is a bigger fiscal dumpster fire than either of these states.

Illinois, CT, Kansas, NJ, Louisiana, and Maine are dysfunctional states.

Illinois, CT, Kansas, NJ, Louisiana, and Maine are dysfunctional states.

Unfortunately, the end result will be a lack of investment and economic growth, which will lead to slowed in migration and increased our migration as the job market falters. The residents of those states, particularly the most vulnerable, will pay the price for their dysfunctional state leadership.

N.J.'s state beaches are closed to everyone else except Christie's family because Christie is the New Jersey governor and when you are N.J.'s governor, you have a summer beach house as a state service.

A list of what's shut down and what's still open, from nj.com:

Shut Down
- State parks and beaches*
- Most state offices
- Motor Vehicle Comission services
- State courts
- Pension and tax offices
- Travel centers
- Disability and family leave claims processing

Still Open
- State Police + National Guard

- Casinos and racetracks
- Road work
- Tollbooths

*Except for, as bronz mentioned, the governor's house at Island Beach State Park.

I've always thought the phrase "government shutdown" promises more than it delivers. I expect to walk outside and for it to be like The Purge or something.

The Dems in the legislature can't agree with each other and it's Christie's fault!

A major issue, as some might say, is that Republicans won a majority of the vote in the 2013 elections in New Jersey but ended up with 40% of the seats.

No, Christie was the one who included taking portions of Horizon Blue Cross reserve fund into the budget. On the other side, democrats wanted an increase in School Funding. The Budget would have passed had Christie never decided to involve Horizon into the discussions.

Edit: Also, redistricting is handled by an independent commission in NJ. More to the point, Democrats won a majority of the vote in 2015 so its moot.

Photos of Christie and his family enjoying an NJ state beach, which is closed to the public because of the shutdown: http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/07/christie_pictured_at_island_beach_state_park_durin.html

Is Christie trying to become the first politician with an approval rating in negative numbers?

Guadagno must seriously hate him at this point. Christie was already in the dumps before, but this whole budget/beach ordeal is just pouring gasoline on the fire, and as the Lt Gov it has to be hard to avoid scrutiny from the public for his tom-foolerly.
