What is the issue for which your position is most contrary to your overall political philosophy?  Examples would be a conservative who supports gay marriage, or a liberal who supports the death penalty.

In my case, I would say that my most liberal view is the belief that the judicial system favors the rich, and the rich can effectively buy themselves, at the very least, a much reduced penalty for whatever crime they commit, as opposed to somebody who cannot afford an expensive lawyer.

Affirmative action. There seem to be scholarships for everyone but smart poor white men.

I agree.  I don't see why an upper middle class black or latino should get preference over a poor white person based on affirmative action.

I suspect a lot of Democrats don't support affirmative action, but are afraid to say so because of their dependency on the black vote.

I think for me its a kneejerk reaction to err on the side of ecologists whenever business is pitted against environmental concerns.  By and large, I favor small government and less government intrusion into business and personal life.  but when I read about activists in San Francisco attempting to cause the airport authority to abort their plans to build more runways, or when I read about some congressman offering legislation to require business to install more scrubbers on the stacks, I almost always immediately think, "yeah, they need to stop putting that crap into the air."  or the water.  or whatever.  I remember being the only republican at my SF Bay area Sierra Club meetings, and how inconsistent everyone thought ecological concern was with my general libertarian leanings, so I'd say that's my most contrary area.  Although I can't point to one specific issue, since so many environmental issues put me at odds with the GOP.  But I tend to side against business when it comes to Man against Nature.

foreign policy. I can't stand the wimps in the left on foreign policy. Almost as bad as those on the right who are too aggressive. Wink

Probably affirmative action.  I absolutely cannot stand manufactured diversity.  If I see another poster that displays one white guy, one black guy, one asian guy, one hispanic guy, a female, and a guy in a wheelchair, I will scream.

This is not even mentioning the fact that physical features are only one single item in a giant vat of characteristics that make us diverse.

I don't care much about gun control either way. It's not a very important issue to me. Howard Dean had an A rating from the NRA, and no one seemed to care.

Well I'm in favour of strict gun control, but thats for another thread.

For me, abortion. It puts me in an unusual position being Pro-Life in a Pro-Choice party.

Affirmative Action. That's probably the only issue where I stand opposed to my ideology.

Affirmitive Action

Gun control is a bit of a cold-button issue for me.

Good question - it's interesting that my break with the GOP is over increased deregulation of business - with the oil, utility, energy companies, which is odd because the longstanding cornerstone to our economic platform has been decereased regulation of business. But in many ways I'm still probably a '70s era or maybe '80s era GOPer. I'm for less intervention and interference into business than about 99.82% of liberals, but I think it can be too deregulated and we're starting to see it all happen. They'll just outsource to where labor is cheaper or sell out to China (which I think will be happening) - I'm also kind of lukewarm on free trade, but not opposed to it.

As far as left-right goes, I lean left and my most conservative position is probably gun control or foreign policy.

However I would describe my overall philosophy as populist, and I can't think of a major non-populist position I have.

I just realized another one last night: Social Security. I think it should be opt-out.
