He was successfully painted (and for good reason) as a top 1%, out of touch tycoon who was clearly out of touch with average Americans and genuinely seemed to lack empathy.

Not only that. He was stiff and awkward on the stump. If he was more natural and likable those attacks would not of stuck.

Except Dole was running against peace and prosperity. Unlike Romney Dole stood no chance. In 2012 economic growth was sluggish. Unemployment was around 8%.
