The 1998 midterms are more Republican-friendly; Feingold, Hollings, and Reid lose, while Faircloth survives.

A 2016 or 2018 with alternate Senate classes (and for 2016 a Clinton win).

Sometime in the future, the Second American Civil War erupts after both parties shift considerably to the left - however, the insurrection is limited to the conservative Deep South and a patch of western Nebraska taken over by radical gun rights activists. The Democratic nominee, a Hispanic Governor from Florida, won in a landslide, but hasn't handled the war well. The Republican ticket, consisting of an Ohioan senator and the Governor of Idaho, campaign on a more conciliatory message, promising to enter in dialogue with the rebel states. Meanwhile, the popular Governor of California launches the Peace Party, a left-wing faction aiming to end the war. The GOP opens up a large lead until the Southorn Army launches a brutal offensive into the plains of Kansas, which leads to the pro-war Democrats recovering in the polls. On Election Night, the Electoral College deadlocks after the progressive West (as well as two Northeastern states) goes to the Peace Party and the Democrats flip Kansas due to horror from the Southern invasion. Montana goes to the Democrats as their Vice President was formerly a popular governor there. The Republican is eventually elected with the blessing of the Peace Party, ending the war and creating an independent state in the South.

(I didn't realize that grey could have been a fourth candidate - hence, this scenario)

Hmm... The solid Democratic South minus Virginia suggests an election in late 40s to the early 60s. Democratic Vermont muddles that a little bit, especially with a Republican NY right next to it. Cali, Arizona, and Alaska going Democratic the same time as the Deep South is a big LOL too. I literally have no idea. I would say this could be a post-FDR Truman map but if FDR couldn't win Vermont even once then... Also Oklahoma rarely went Dem at all... OMG!

Is it a map of the US Senate at some point in time? Maybe the party most represented in each state in the House?

I made it as a theoretical map for a US election system if the Federalist Party had survived (Democrats remain a Southern, populist party, while Federalists are the Northern, suburban party). Minnesota, Vermont, and Rhode Island are outliers with strong local Democratic institutions based on labor organizations, while California and Arizona are Democratic due to socially conservative minority votes (though NM is doubly an outlier too).
