First off, would you complain if a socialist wanted to run in the Democrat Party because he couldn't get elected as a socialist?

Bernie Sanders managed to get elected.
He's independent.

Once again leading me to ask - This changes my question how? Grin
It doesn't. You asked if we would let a socialist into our party, and he said Bernie Sanders was one. I corrected him, saying he is an independent. So you should thank me and give me money.

I wasn't really directing that at you, more to the fact that you were proving my point about it being irrelevant.

My point was that Sanders, unlike Paul,  gets elected without a major party.

Your point is still irrelevant to the question.

I don't find you that conservative, more like a moderate Republican.  Maybe you choose to be less vocal about your conservatism than others, say AuH20 or A18.

I'm definitely less conservative than those you mentioned.  I guess it depends upon the definition of "moderate" versus "conservative."  I call myself conservative because I can't really think of any issues where I favor the Democratic position over the Republican one.  Maybe I would favor a very moderate Democrat over an extremely conservative Republican if I evaluated the candidate only on his/her own merits, but I'd still be worried about the baggage anybody in the Democratic party carries.

I don't mind being called a conservative.  I am a conservative, simply not an extreme one.  There are different degrees of it.

But down the line, I lean to the right.  In general, my positions are:

-Limited government in general, lower taxes
-Trim/minimize welfare and social spending, especially that which has not shown itself to be constructive (which is most of it)
-Strong national defense
-Harsh treatment of criminals
-Oppose judicial activism -- that means no court-imposed social changes such as gay marriage
-Believe the abortion issue should be taken out of the courts and given back to the states
-Support the traditional family unit over "alternate" families.

I may not take these positions as far as some other conservatives do, but on no major issue do I sympathize with the liberal position.

My most "liberal" position is my belief that the justice system favors those with money.  But even here, it's not that I sympathize with poor criminals and think they should be treated with more leniency; I think that the rich should be treated far more harshly, and that their money should count for less.

The old opebo was an interesting mix of extreme economic conservatism and social libertarianism.  I think the old opebo was the real opebo, and the "new" opebo is a fraud.

I agree with that. I think dazzle is a pretty sound moderate conservative Republican, who in addition to many Forum Democrats and quite a few other Forum Republicans, I'd like to see hold political office someday (if he hasn't/doesn't do so already)

We don't always agree but I quite enjoy his feedback on what I have to say

Thanks man.  I'd say the same about you.  I always appreciate it when people can present their opinions in a logical and non-confrontational manner.  Whether I agree or not, I respect that.

That's OK.  You're an old-fashioned Yankee conservative.  Good for you.
