.357 magnum is a pretty good weapon - once a person gets used to a larger caliber, I personally would recommend it. That and the .38 would be about the perfect thing for defense and would be what you'd need, IMO - I know a lot of people who have .38 revolvers - compact enough as to not take up much space and it's medium enough still as to not be an outright hand cannon. And as David suggests, best to not start with the larger calibers.

For a semi-automatic, I like the classic Colt .45, but I don't think there are many of those around anymore. Some folks don't like semi automatics because they can jam and these folks usually prefer revolvers. So it depends on preference and what a person likes once they start practicing.

I like the Colt 1910 .45 personally. Now that is one hell of a weapon. I have no idea why the military gave that up for the crappy 9mm.

Politics!

Specifically, at the time the US was stationing IRBMs in europe to counter Soviet weapons, so we adopted an Italian 9 mm.

I know realitivly nothing about this, so, if I'm asking to many stupid questions, just shoot me Cheesy:P

But I was wondering if this gun would be suitable for Concealed Carry:

Rubber grip, 6 shot capacity. Yeah, it looks ok.

Hey, I felt sorry for him when he said that, too, poor guy, no one told him anything Sad  I'm really interested to see where this story line goes and who turns out to be on the team.  This is one of the few things where I avoid spoilers.

I like the staff weapons because in the first episode I ever watched, Teal'C and Bra'Tac were twirling those around and blasting the Goa'uld to bits.

Not for personal use, and I never will in that regard. I'm leaving soon to being my training for the Philadelphia Police Department so I'll have a duty gun, but thats all. I (personally) don't see the need as I'm not a hunter and am happy to have police etc watching my back.

Yeah, what's up with that?  You're freaking libertarians!  You're supposed to have five billion guns and to be armed to the teeth because you want to demolish the evil government! Cheesy

Does Ruger have dealers or do you have to order through catalouge?  I can't find a dealer listing anywhere on the website.

Yeah, back a long time ago my grandfather used to have antique weapons like that. I know he had an old Colt .45, but I'm not sure if was that 1910 model, which was a great gun. It probably was. I know he had an old rifle that was given to him or his dad, I forget, by a cowboy around 1905 - .32-20 I believe (but not sure on the caliber - I don't really remember), it had an octagon shaped barrel - it was something else. Then he had a musket that a cowboy had given to his dad back in the 1800s. Those were some really nice guns.

Yes I do own a few firearms. They are for hunting only though, not for self protection. I fall on the republican side of the gun control issue
