Unlike the rest of Western Maryland, it tended to voter less Republican through the 20th century. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won it was Carter in 1976, and the last time any Democrat won it in a statewide election was Mikulski in 2004. Does anyone know why it was more Democratic? Was there significant union influence there?
