The African Union is demanding two permanent seats on the Security Council.  The two countries that would make most sense, Egypt and South Africa, are considered not to be African enough.  In fact, if you look at what the AU is pushing for, it seems like they consider the whole Middle East area of Africa to be not really part of Africa.

South Africa, apparently, is too white to be a real representative of Africa.

What do you believe?

That's particularly stupid with South Africa.  Egypt I could understand being seen as part of the Mid-East.  But South Africa is controlled by blacks now anyway.

You know, the word Africa once meant the Libya/Tunisia area. It was a Roman province.

And Asia was a Roman province in Anatolia.

Yep. I often find it amusing how Chinese people are called Asians, and South Africans African because of this.

What most likely happened is that Romans started calling the whole northern coast "Africa" which then spread to the whole continent.

I'd probably say that I consider anybody whose family has been in Africa for probably 2-3 generations or more to be 'African'.

If you live in Africa, you're African.  Seems simple enough to me.

I see your point, but I wouldn't consider somebody who's only lived there for a year or two to be African.  Especially somebody who's whiter than white and had never even visited Africa before.

I suppose, given that, come to think of it, you need an American citizenship before you can call yourself an American.

Of course, there's no African citizenship given that it's a continent.  I don't think your parents need to be from Africa for you to be an African, though.  You just need to live there long enough (and not have any intention to leave, of course).

I guess its all about self-determination.  If somebody considers themselves to be African, and has a valid claim to it, then who are we to stop them?  Richius here is a good example.

Yes, there's no real test to see if you're African or not.  It really all depends on what you consider yourself to be (although if someone has never, ever been to Africa, it wouldn't exactly make sense for that person to consider himself to be African).

Why not turn it around?  Can White people in Africa be Black?  According to Black Power types in the '60s, the answer is yes.  They claimed Cleopatra a great Black woman, even though she was ethnic Macedonian (but they probably didn't know that...).

All people from Africa, even the Egyptians and Algerians (who are Arabs) and the white Afrikaners.  To me, if you were born and raised on the continent, you'd be African.  Though the public at large views African as referring to only black people (i.e. ethnic sub-Saharan Africans).

Yep.  Common sense.

If you want to refer to a black person, call them black.  Just because you're African does not make you black, and vice versa.

Native peoples that have been living there, I most certainly wouldn't think of descendants of Arab immigrants in North Africa as African.

Nor are descendants of Dutch/East Indian/British immigrants 'African' either.

None of our 'immigrant' groups goes around claiming that they are Native American/Indian, because hence thier ancestors aren't from here.

What do you believe?

I believe it to bunch of horsesh#t that the Africans want it to be the most "African" country, it should be either be the most democratic and stable country, or its should given to a committee of all the countries in Africa, who should decide the decisions with 2/3 majority. The former is the best way.
