Looking over the 2016 election results, Hillary Clinton won 59% of New York state's vote for president, but Chuck Schumer won 70% in its vote for senator. This means that there were hundreds of thousands of voters who backed for Trump for president, and Schumer for senator.

On paper, this is an odd prospect, as Trump has repeatedly vilified Schumer as the poster boy of Washington's establishment problems. What kind of voter splits their ballot like this, and what are their motivations?

A union/former union blue collar factory worker who liked both Donald Trump and Chuck Schumer's statements on the TPP and China being a currency manipulator. They thought Hillary was secretly pro free trade and didn't trust her.

Moderate Republicans in Long Island and Upstate, essentially everyone who wasn't a hardcore Trumpster.

Wouldn't a lot of Orthodox Jews also fit into this category?

Someone who always votes for incumbent Senators who aren't being seriously challenged, regardless of party. I don't really get this mindset, but it appears to exist to a large degree.

Mostly Jews and urban rural workers, the latter especially in the big upstate NY cities.

I've done it. While Senate elections are no less "political" than House ones, I see the role of a Senator as to serve as a kind of senior spokesperson (perhaps that's why the minimum age for a US Senator is 30, vs. 25 for Representative). Thus, I voted to re-elect Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) in 2002, even though I was closer to his GOP opponent on some issues and most of the rest of my ballot was Republican; I valued Levin's experience, especially after 9/11.

Sacrificial lambs often lack the experience needed to do the job, and it's unclear how many of them actually want it, and how many just filed because they dislike unanimous votes or felt like seeing their name on a ballot for once. This is why, while I do endorse a sacrificial lamb here and there, I generally avoid it.

True. An underrated factor in Schumer's success is winning the key New York areas of Sarasota, Florida, and Sicily, Italy.

Many of these Schumer-Trump voters went against Gillibrand in 2018, who did much worse than Schumer throughout most of Upstate New York. Given polarization, I doubt that a performance like Schumer's will be replicable for Democrats in the future. Many of the counties that he won (he carried 56 of New York's 62 counties) are trending Republican rapidly.
