How many people on the alt-right even speak French?

Since we all like discussing unusual political theories...

Discuss how the Angevin Empire affects current day French politics.

I think it would be more accurate to say that western France is more fiscally conservative, while eastern France is more socially conservative.

Normandy, Brittany, Burgundy, etc, are strongholds of the PS and can in no way be called "fiscally conservative."

Question, if there was a generic candidate of the right out there, without any personal baggage, who was running on Le Pens platform, but wasn't associated at all with the FN, would they be perceived as on the far right?  And would such a candidate have a chance of winning.  Before his personal baggage was exposed, it seemed that on immigration Fillon was coming fairly close to Le Pen politically.

The closest to that was Sarkozy '07 when he gained traction in the primaries for the main center-right party because he was best seen as somebody who could pull the vast majority of FN voters(90% of them voted for him in the second round despite Sarkozy running on an more economically right-wing platform just because he was one of the candidates of the main parties who they shared closest with views on immigration. (Which was helped because when he was the mayor of a suburban ille de france commune he refused to accept the building of public housing).

He was perceived as sympathetic to the far-right but not considered far-right.

You guys know that the FN was a neo-liberal Thatcherite party in the '80s right? Protectionism came along as an easy cudgel to use railing against the EEC and later EU.

They're not even trying to hide it anymore- this is a war between Putin-supported populist-nationalism and the western values. Supporting Le Pen is opposing democratic values.

The worst thing is that's not even a half plus seven rule violation. Macron is fine with any woman at least 27.

Ah! I withdraw my aspersions unreservedly, but I had never seen that thread before.

Sad that was a legitimate thought about Ukraine. Poor Lviv being stuck at the extreme edge west of that feel-good social liberalism and radical fiscal doctrine!

"The half plus seven rule" is where your mind goes when people plan to spread rumors about somebody sleeping with his stepdaughter? Really?

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing deported all illegals when he was president but that was back in the 70s when such a thing was well within the Overton window. Today he would be considered literally Hitler and would probably get bombed by NATO and put on trail in The Hague.

When said "rumors" are so pathetic, obviously false, and so blatantly disproven by what we have above...

A map of the winner in each town sized by the population:

Wow, this certainly makes me feel better. Glad Le Pen isn't dominating super populous areas.

"ayy lmao" still seems like a more appropriate response than an implicit "but it would be fine (even if only in one particular respect) if he were sleeping with his stepdaughter".

Trump fanboys on reddit are trying to claim that Marine stepping down as President of the FN for two weeks is a major game changer. Meanwhile on major french websites its already old news.

If rumors about FBM having unusual romantic attractions/and or being gay or bisexual gain traction, that might actually reassure some voters on the right, with them thinking that he might be a closet islamophobe because of this, sort of like Pym Fortuyn was in the Netherlands.

My department (l'Aude) had the two anti system candidates arriving first (first Le Pen then Melenchon).  Does anyone know which other departments had the same result?

I think the Auvergnats might be a bit surprised to find out that they are "cool, trendy and urban" Tongue

Off the top of my head, Pas-de-Calais, Nord, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hérault, Gard, Pyrénées-Orientales. Basically the "populist" areas on the Med Coast (somewhat surprising) and the North (not surprising).

Ariège was the only place where Mélenchon came first and Le Pen second.

Looks like Elabe has the race at 64-36 right now. And they were the most accurate in round 1.

Le Pen is definitely going to struggle with the 35% ...

Mélenchon 1st, Le Pen 2nd: Ariège, Guyane, La Réunion, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon

In Switzerland (apparently the biggest French abroad community):

Macron - 34.7% (45.6% in German CH; 32.7% in French)
Fillon - 30.8% (28.2% in German; 31.2% in French)
Mélenchon - 15.1% (10.3% in German; 16% in French)
Le Pen - 8.1% (6.1% in German; 8.4% in French)
Hamon - 5.9% (5.5% in German; 5.9%)

http://www.lematin.ch/monde/Les-Francais-de-Suisse-ont-plebiscite-Macron/story/18127329

Tribune de Genève even has detailed breakdowns by Canton in French Switzerland (and even more detailed for Geneva and Vaud).

Macron won in Vaud, Fribourg and Neuchâtel; Fillon in Geneva, Jura and Valais. Voting patterns in Geneva and Vaud were amusingly similar to voting patterns in Swiss elections.

Sometimes I wonder if we're even a different country...
