Personally, I range somewhere between "not a fan" and "can't stand it". I have a similar stance on those who venture out into the world (presuming no formidable gap in their means to obtain such wares, of course) without a second thought whilst wearing any assortment of sweatwear or pajama pants. The irony that those who do so are at least fifty percent of the time in no way inclined toward athletic activity makes this all the worse.

Crumpets, I am referring far more to the latter (the couple in the first picture appears to be living the ideal life), but in general I was thinking of the types--some of whom I'm related to--that, regardless of whether they have practice that day, will usually be caught wearing athletic shorts and basketball shoes, with upper-wear confined mostly to t-shirts or maybe a hoodie.

EDIT: Changed thread title for clarity.

Obviously unacceptable, even for playing sports unless you're in competition or training for competition.

Athletically-inspired casual clothing is fine, but I still wouldn't wear them unless I was playing sports.

I have worn the "banana shorts" (read: yellow shorts) I bought for gym class in the 8th grade many times. Oddly enough, I was the only boy (well, "boy" Wink) in the class to wear banana shorts. All the others opted for blue ones. 7th-grade boys were more diverse on the matter.

EDIT: 8th grade girls were also more diverse on the matter.

Other than that, never really cared for it. This represents my opinion on the matter quite well:

I will usually wear nice shorts and a t-shirt, but sometimes it will be gym shorts and a t-shirt (usually with flip flops), if I have no where to be.  If I want to look nicer, but don't have to get really dressed up, it's usually a polo and nice shorts.

I'm wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt.  For the next six months, unless I'm at work, it is my standard uniform.  It may also include underwear and shoes or sunglasses if the situation demands it.

You can probably guess how I voted.  Smiley

It doesn't bother me, unless the figure within is not height-weight proportional.

I see no problem with a pair of basketball shorts or sweatpants in the heat of summer, but some people wear this outfit throughout the entire year.
Shorts are never acceptable for men outside of sports or beach wear. And when it comes to wearing shorts for sports, they have to be above knee-length. Björn Borg, Bob Cousy, and Franz Beckenbauer were not afraid to show their legs, why should men today?

(Steve Bannon, of course, is exempt from this rule)

I never wear long pants unless I am getting dressed up enough to be putting on a tie, including in the winter.  I just find them much less comfortable (yes, I'm one of those fat guys who wears short sleeves and shorts in January).

You were the gentleman who mentioned that he often wears loafers, right? Which brands do you normally wear, if you don't mind?
My favorite is my pair of Aldens which I have worn to within an inch of their life and need to send for recrafting before I start wearing again this year, but they're kind of expensive, so most of my shoes are Allen Edmonds, which I find to be the perfect balance of price and quality. I put pennies in them too, of course.

My, what awful judgmental people we have here. I wear basketball shorts and more often than not polyester 'jersey' type shirts (but blank) the entire year because even in cold weather I get hot quite easily, especially if the sun is out (and I'm allergic to denim on top of it.)

Unless you're not in some formal occasion there's no reason to dress in any way other than what you feel comfortable in, as long as you're not being lewd in the process.

fashion nazis suck, don't be a fashion nazi

People should wear what they feel comfortable wearing, not what some upper middle class white guys on the internet feels comfortable with them wearing.  Seriously, eff you.  You're almost as bad as beer elitists.

Yeah I don't do sweat pants or athletic shorts outside of my place......hoodies, sure.   No sleeveless either, though my tattoo does rock.

LOL, if I'm going to the liquor store to grab some beer on Saturday afternoon, I'm perfectly willing to wear a t-shirt and shorts...

You claim to value comfort and then say you like polyester clothes. You can't have it both ways.

Nice, nice. Alden is a bit too expensive for me, but I agree about AE. Is cordovan worth it, by the way?
The durability is great and I think it can look gorgeous, depending on the shoes. I still almost always buy calfskin though, because the $150-200 difference in price is almost enough to buy a second pair of shoes.

I don't understand the problem. Is there anything uncommon in wearing casually athletic clothes?

I'm strongly opposed to people who deviate from aesthetic traditions, in order to look like extras from a made-for-TV sci-fi movie.

No it's very common here.  In fact, I think that's the essential problem for the OP:  It's common.  Unlike those of other OECD countries, our sartorial achievements are not of the high-maintenance variety.  If you go to a casino in Monte Carlo everyone dons tuxedo or an evening gown.  If you go to a casino in Reno everyone has a wife beater and either blue jeans, sweatpants, or gym shorts.  We're pretty laid back here.  Well, except for cathcon and simfan.  Especially simfan, who thinks we should all be dressed like the Earl of Sandwich when we go out in public.
