Presidents of the Socialist Republic of America:

1. Huberty Humphrey (Socialist Party) 1968-81
2. Ted Kennedy (Socialist Party) 1981-85
3. George McGovern (Peace Socialist) 1985-93
4. Douglas Wilder (African American Socialist) 1993-2005
5. Howard Dean (Progressive Socialist) 2005-13
6. Mike Gravel (Western Socialist Party) 2013-21
7. Kamala Harris (Black Socialist Party) 2021-present

Alternate timeline where the U.S. is a "one-party state" run by the Socialist Party and her sister parties. Traditionally, the governing President filled the gap of the establishment Socialist Party, winning states like IL, NJ, CT, routinely. The South is more black than OTL since Democratic whites in the region were disenfranchised for 25 years (so birthrates fell a lot and some fled) after the Socialist takeover and now the region is conservative outside of black-majority states like SC, GA, MS, MD.

Contests are relatively free for Socialist Party candidates but to date non-Socialist campaigns are suppressed as much as possible, especially in the West.

The West is Socialist and populist, by and large, like Fremont in Atlasia.

FTR, the "Socialists" were never really socialists and were just left-wing Democrats in general though some hard-left candidates ran and won some states like Jill Stein, Cynthia McKinney, Lenora Fulani, etc.

EDIT: I just saw Oldiesfreak1854's post a few posts up. This post was inspired by the idea of what if anti-war sentiment led "Socialist" revolutionaries to sweep the country in '68 forcing LBJ out in what was basically a coup. Humphrey endorses the coup and becomes President and the U.S. immediately withdraws from Vietnam.

2024 candidate field (as a bonus):

Running:

Barack Obama (Socialist Party)

Marianne Williamson (Peace Socialist)

Kamala Harris (Black Socialist Party)
Cori Bush (Black Socialist Party)

Joe Manchin (Appalachian Socialist)

Alternate Universe where the economy is always good and there is no terrorism, war, or foreign crises.

1992: George H.W. Bush is re-elected, Ross Perot doesn't run, and Bush defeats Bubba, with 53% of the popular vote versus 46% for Clinton.

1996: Ann Richards, the D Governor of Texas, defeats R nominee Bob Dole, 55% - 44%.  Voters like Richards personally, and have Republican fatigue after 16 long years of them in power.

2000: President Richards presides over an especially good late-90s economy.  The Republicans choose John McCain, Arizona senator.  Richards defeats McCain, 55% - 44%.

2004: The R primary is a battle between John McCain, the 2000 nominee, and George W. Bush, who succeeded Ann Richards as Governor of Texas.  Bush wins and proceeds to easily defeat Howard Dean, who won the D primary, 54% - 45%.

2008: George W. Bush is defeated for re-election by Barack Obama, Senator from Illinois.  The economy under Bush had been fine, but Obama runs a great campaign and manages to defeat Bush, 51% to 48%.

2012: Donald Trump defeats the Bush wing in the R primary and goes up against President Obama, who with no economic woes is more popular.  Obama expands his popular vote margin in his re-election, 55% to 44%.

2016: Joe Biden, VP to Obama, wins the D nomination.  Trump again wins the R nomination.  Biden is elected POTUS, 52% to 47%.

2020: I'm not sure who would win this one, what do you think?

President McCain's approval falls to 26% during the summer 2011 troop surge in Iraq. Trump, campaigns with the moniker "Make America Great Again" looking to end the wars and American imperialism overseas, holding big corporations accountable, cutting taxes for the middle class, and shaking up Washington DC. Trump's populist message resonates across party lines, he gains the support of former Presidents Limbaugh, Clinton, and Harkin, wins in a 398-135 landslide in 2012, 425 to 108 in 2016, as the Republican party fails to let go of it's white collar, country club, corporate image, and neoconservative foreign policy.

46th President of the United States
January 20, 2021 - January 20, 2029
def 2020: Barack Obama / Gretchen Whitmer
def 2024: Joe Biden / Kamala Harris

President Trump has near universal approval from Democrats and strong approvals from Republicans through 2019, but faces backlash inside the Democratic party for allowing states to dictate COVID-19 mitigation policies. Incumbent VP and Dem nominee Barack Obama campaigns on the administration's vaccine development, while slightly distancing himself from his boss on mitigation. On the Republican side, Rand Paul pleads for the Republican Party to lose unpopular tired policies, campaigns on shaking up DC, cutting taxes, regulations, and being a Trump ally in the Senate. Paul wins the nomination over Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Mitt Romney, and Jeb Bush. The general election is close, with PA and Arizona results not coming in for days. Paul is projected to win PA to pass 270 electoral votes at 11:30pm ET on November 6, 2020, and be elected the nation's 46th President.

44. Ron Dellums (Restore America) 2017-18 died in office
45. Gretchen Whitmer (Restore America) 2018-19 impeached and removed
46. Marjorie Taylor Greene (American National) 2019-present succeeded to the Presidency and won re-election in 2020

Segregation ends in 2006 ITTL. Wallace used his influence to force his second wife out once their marriage ended and he urged the House to impeach his third wife after the same but could not get a conviction. Dellums won in a huge upset but the dream of America on the road to recovery fell apart as Gretchen Whitmer was quickly impeached and removed from office after the midterms when the Republicans regained a Senate supermajority. U.S. elections are also far from free and fair. House Speaker MTG succeeded to the presidency after the PPT refused to serve and since Whitmer was unable to confirm a VP.
