A huge HP. Even setting aside all the Pro 3rd Reich horrificness, his brand of trad-Catholic romantic nationalism and economic protectionism did decades worth of huge damage to the Irish economy and society. WG Cosgrave is the real hero of the early Irish independence. Fortunately over the last 3 decades most of the problems he contributed to have been dramatically alleviated, with some titianic effort from the post FitzGerald governments and the Irish people themselves.

Not a good person by any stretch, but I have to admire his role in freeing Ireland from the last vestiges of British colonialism.

Are you referring to his fight for the Irish independence or the Irish Civil War? Because if it's about the former, then you should label all U.S. founding fathers or Simon Bolivar as terrorist thugs.

Echoing what others have said, de Valera is a clear example of a horrible person who also managed to be a literal FF.

Many currently respected leaders, for example Israeli Menachem Begin, were once what we would label terrorists. In the end, what should be measured is the amount of targeting civilians, the brutality, and the motives. In my opinion de Valera was an HP, but I could see the argument to the other side.

his role in freeing Ireland from the last vestiges of British colonialism.

The people of Londonderry might disagree with that.

The descendants of colonists tend to be quite fond of colonialism, yeah.

The people of Londonderry aren't exactly pro-British colonialism. Now Belfast on the other hand...

The descendants of colonists tend to be quite fond of colonialism, yeah.

They've lived there for rather longer than the families of most people on this forum have lived where they have. Lot of things can be said about Unionism, but that particular line of argument is best avoided.

I think it should be pointed out the Irish fighters for independence waged a legitimate guerrilla war. They targeted British military and security personnel, which certainly doesn't qualify them as "terrorists".

Ah, but when a Taliban sets off an IED that kills American soldiers, does that count as terrorism?

No. A violent act doesn't have to be terrorism to be morally bad, even if it's done by a group that also does terrorism.
