I'd say MI and PA would be a good example.
For the record, Michigan has some diversity as far as: Upper Peninsula-populist in as far as the term economically liberal, socially conservative goes, however only a small percentage (10% give or take) lives here.
most of the Lower Peninsula- conservative, for some part libertarian in that Republicans are hands off on gun control, taxes, and wanting a lot of programs.  However it's not to say all of the nonDetroit area Lower Peninsula is like this
Detroit-heavily Democrat.  Auto workers, blacks, welfare recipients, it's a big city, need I say more?
metro Detroit- THE political hotspot.  John Kerry and George Bush made multiple visits to the area in hopes to win it over.  Michigan is a swing state, but this is where the swing vote occurs.  Even to being so close as my home, 16 Mile Rd and south vote more Democratic, Warren is largely Democratic because of Detroit's influence and going north of 20 mile road there's more Bush support, more towns, more country area.

Hope this clarifies Smiley

Maine - Oregon
New Hampshire - Delaware
Vermont - Hawaii
Massachusetts - Maryland
New York - Illinois
Virginia - Georgia
North Carolina - Missouri
South Carolina - Utah
Florida - Texas
Alabama - Indiana
Kentucky - Kansas
West Virginia - Arkansas

This whole system breaks down when you get to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa.  They are all good matches for one another, but all border, and don't really match with anyone else.

Florida is nothing like either Louisiana or Texas. Both are much more socially conservative.

You'd say otherwise after experiencing Mardi Gras in the French Quarter, or Spring Break on South Padre Island. Smiley

Anyway, Florida is full of Catholic Cubans, Elderly Jews, and White rednecks.  Plenty of social conservatives, as the Terri Schaivo (Shiaivo? Chiavio?) case demonstrated.

1)  How are Illinois and Washington anything alike?

If not for the big city(realistically 1 county) in each, they both flip GOP. Southern IL is to Indiana as western WA is to Idaho. State governments are democratic. Both senators are Democrats in IL and at least 1(maybe both? can't remember who the other is right now) in WA is a Democrat.

Seattle leans libertarian and Chicago leans authoritarian.

I was thinking more along the lines that you have two low-lying swamp states, both with very liberal major cities filled with ethnic minorities.  As soon as you leave that city, you enter StatesRights country.

Illinois and Delaware are alike, in a way. Both only vote strongly Democrat because of one city.
