O'Malley could do very well in 2020, but the general election would be an uphill battle, clearly.

Guess it's time to go to Martin O'Malley dot com.

If he wants to keep even half of these numbers, his supporters really need to hold strong at their caucus.

O'Malley could be a good 2020 candidate. He was a mayor and was a governor. He has the experience, and he is the boring white male, but he would do well in some Rust Belt/White Catholic areas.
People couldn't give two flying s about experience right now. Literally one of the most qualified presidential candidates in history lost to a giant orange turd with a silver spoon in his mouth. People are largely looking for meaningful change to their political and economic status. That's why both Trump and Sanders were so popular. You need to have vision to run for president right now and O'Malley lacks that. What platform did he even run on in 2016?

O’Malley 2020 kind of reminds me of John Edwards 2008.  Edwards was doing everything he could to combat the perception that he was to the right of primary opponents Clinton and Obama (a perception that seemed to exist simply because he was a white male with a Southern accent).  So he ran to Clinton’s and Obama’s left, at least on economic issues.  He had to overcompensate because he realized that his “natural” base within the party wouldn’t win him the nomination, so he had to go left.

Similarly, I think O’Malley senses that the smart political play is for him to go maximalist on voicing opposition to Trump, and going left on the issues, and so his Twitter feed is filled with hyperbolic denunciations of Trump (e.g., “racist”, “fascist”, and the latest: “knuckle-dragging throwback”), and he’s out there doing things like protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline and advocating for a $15 minimum wage.

Could it actually work though?  Or is O’Malley stuck, in that no matter what policy positions he advocates or what rhetorical bombs he flings at Trump, it’s not going to come across as authentic?

My guess is it most likely will not work. He may get more attention in the short term, but Democratic primary campaigns like that would fizzle out in the long term.
