Will we see a repeat of 1948, or has the Middle East progressed past that?

If the United States divests itself of its client state, Israel will have to find itself another protector -Russia, perhaps?

Historically, the USSR strongly supported Israel's establishment, hoping to gain an ally in the region. It went the other way around.

They're a rich country, they'll just pay for it themselves.

Russia's GDP is the size of Australia's. It simply can't afford to play a superpower with a military to match, while maintaining a network of client states.

Israel's economy is strong. There would have to be cutbacks to military RND, to be sure, but Israel could keep functioning on its own. The real threat is a global embargo led by the EU and a left-wing US government, which could lead to severe military escalation.

India seems a more likely patron.

I think the real answer though, is that they taken over the Palestinians.

No, India is extremely unlikely (as is Russia, mind you). While the two countries have a good economic relation, India is nowhere near advanced enough to serve this role. In fact, Israel has been a major contributor of technology and training to the Indian military.

That may be, but Russia still has that vote on the UN Security Council....

Nothing. most of the foreign funding is basically US gov. supporting US defence industry.
There are two strategic issues Israel relies heavily on foreign aid for and it's energy and another defence thing. It's possible to do without but it will take several years to prepare for such scenario (and have all the logistic changes required military wise).

Basically if you want to hurt Israel foreign aid money isn't the sensitive spot...foreign capital going in though...

I don't see Russia having interest in sustaining Israel (assuming Israel would be really unable to sustain itself, not something we can presume for sure), which would screw all the progress they made in the Arab world.
