Why is Morris County, New Jersey so Republican? Yes, I know that it is the home base of Gov. Chris Christie (R-Mendham), and others, but since when has Morris County been so Republican like the equivalent of Staten Island, New York?

Trump was down 5 points from Romney in Morris County, while the GOP vote increased 8 points with Trump on the ballot.

My guess is that it's pretty typical affluent white collar suburbia, with fewer Jews and "liberal elites" than say, Westchester.

It went for Trump by less than five points -less than it did for John McCain. It's a classic "suburban Republican" county inside the Acela Corridor. Why shouldn't it be Republican? There was never a point in this county's history where it wasn't quite Republican.

It has some blue collar enclaves like Netcong that go GOP every year, although it is one of the towns that is pro-union. Interesting.

It is a typical middle-class white suburban county. It does have some Democratic spots on the map, like the Asian-heavy Parsippany and the Hispanic area of Dover, or Madison where the county's major colleges are, but it's overwhelmed by the rest of the county. It did swing towards Hillary this election, however.

My stereotypical to the point of archetype Mid-Atlantic lace-curtain Irish oligarch grandfather--Pacific Theater, Harvard Business School, Wall Street, Exxon, Latin America--lived in Convent Station for the second half of his life. He was a more representative case than he would be in most places.

Isn't Morris the home county of Steve Forbes?

Isn't Morris the home county of Steve Forbes?

Yes, Steve Forbes is from Morris County. He was born in Morristown, N.J. He grew up in Somerset County, wealthy Far Hills, N.J. Far Hills, N.J. is also where former Gov. Christie Whitman grew up and also where Andrew Schafly, the son of former pro-life activist Phyllis Schafly lives.

I suppose Forbes' demographic fits Morris County. White collar educated suburban professionals. However, there is some blue collar, working class white areas of Morris County, like Jefferson, Denville, etc. that voted for Trump easily.

Most white suburban areas are republican, even if many did trend away from Trump.

Why is that so, though? Is it simply about because of taxes, or something else?

Social conservatism (but also social liberalism) is actually stronger with well-off suburbanites than it is with the working class, who never really thinks about abortion or transgenderism.
