I have heard from all sides trying to explain why Hillary lost. From progressives in the party,I've heard that Hillary and Corporate Democrats embracing Wall Street and taking corporate money has hurt the party. The cite the polls that had Bernie beating Trump by more than Hillary and the fact that he did better with Independents and Rust Belt Democrats. On the other side, people have cited that Moderate dems like Manchin and Heidi H could possible to better in the Rust Belt because they are elected dems from deep red states.

Which side is right and which candidate could unite Blue Dog Dems Establishment Dems and Far left progressives and actually destroy Trump in 2020?

Both but mainly Bernie wing when you breakdown the numbers in the swing states had enough Jill/protest votes came home Hillary win Fl/Penn/MI/WIS. Right now the best unity canidate is probably Bullock, the Colorado gov with the funny last name, Warren, or Julian Castro if he somehow got hot like Obama did

Ron Wyden, Jeff Merkley, Al Franken, or Kamala Harris would unite the party.

Best running mates to unite the party:
Ron Wyden: Kamala Harris, Deval Patrick, Tammy Baldwin, Elizabeth Warren
Al Franken/Jeff Merkley: Henry Cuellar, Anthony Foxx, Catherine Cortez Masto, Joaquin Castro, Kamala Harris
Kamala Harris: Henry Cuellar, Joaquin Castro, Pete Buttigieg, Sherrod Brown, Al Franken

Al Franken seems to be the best of all worlds with the current bench.

But ultimately, a dark horse outsider with strong progressive cred is probably the way to go.

Sherrod Brown is probably the best to unite the party... and the best to win over some of the Obama-Trump Voters (of the few I talk to regularly... when mention various potential candidates... Sherrod Brown seems to get the best response (Julian Castro surprisingly gets positive responses... though usually suggested as a good VP... Warren gets the worst response).

So a good ticket...
Sherrod Brown/ Julian Castro(if he runs for Pres & has a good Primary showing)

...although the new trend ticket (of the past 16 years) seems to be having a less experience Presidential w/ a more experience VP to sure up the experience of  the ticket

Franken has grown on me as the unity choice, though he's decidedly less "establishment" than some others. Franken/Bel Edwards, Franken Bullock, or Franken/Gillibrand would be unity tickets.

Warren's the only candidate who would satisfy the two wings of the party and has also demonstrated an interest in running. Murphy and Brown both haven't (in Murphy's case a very strong denial that he will run, in Brown's case people close to him have indicated that he has no interest in running). If Kamala Harris chooses to mount a bid then she would also be optimal.

But this is assuming the 2020 primary will be a lot like 2016, which I highly doubt.

Warren is the obvious frontrunner, especially after Tuesday night's events. She and Bernie (kinda) are right now the leaders of the progressive wing. She'll definitely be the favorite of the millennials since Bernie will be almost 80. If not her, I could see Harris, Booker, or Franken step up.

Sherrod Brown/Julian Castro. Old white guy who is popular in the Midwest, populist so can win back Trump voters, and solidly progressive. Castro is young and Hispanic, so makes the ticket seem 'fresh', good contrast with Trump/Pence, and he can galvanise Hispanics and the minority vote in states like Arizona and Florida.

Brown may be too boring and old though, and maybe too liberal, while Castro may be a lightweight, a Dan Quayle.

Basically we need a younger Joe Biden who is ideally either a woman or a minority or both.

Warren, S. Brown, Franken, Wyden, and Merkley could all be good candidates in that order (maybe flip Warren and Brown).

There's no optimal candidate, but Bernie seems like the best for now.

I agree with Brown/Franken heading the ticket. Then put someone young and fresh in as VP. Who that is, I don't know yet. Maybe Kamala Harris?

She lost because she was uninspiring, and no one believed her changes in policy. Put in a Corey Booker or Bernie Sanders (one establishment, the other progressive), I think they win because they're far more believable when they speak.

I think she was the only candidate who could lose to the moron we have now. Ofc, she won democratically, but we don't live in a democracy so that fact is irrelevant.

So we need someone who in his first race for president was caught plagiarizing, and in his second attempt bragged about coming from a former slave state, made fun of Indian-Americans and called Obama the first articulate and clean African-American.  Gotcha.

Klobuchar. Female, Midwestern, locks down MN which is a swing state at this point, very little baggage. Can't see her getting through the primaries though she's very boring and is not really a 'fighter' that most Ds are looking for right now. Sherrod Brown is a 2nd best bet and if he wins re-election he will be considered an electoral superstar and will have some serious cred.

Booker, Gillibrand, Harris, and Warren will all be considered "coastal elites" no matter how hard they try to appeal to rural communities. A Midwestern nominee is what the party needs right now.

Nah, just some 45-year old scrappy kid from Scranton who has a compelling life story and a strong moral compass.

Also with the brains of Bill Clinton, and the clean background of Jimmy Carter, and the charisma of Barack Obama, and the looks of JFK. Also maybe a woman or a minority with a cute family.
