It's good for the protesters and the world to have free speech and a right to peaceful protest.

Australia removed capital punishment because of peaceful mass protest.

These protests do have an effect, no question.

As for Trump's popularity going up, I think the republican voters feel a sense of embolden (~ment) when they see thousands protesting Trump.

I think a lot of people are protesting the election of Donald Trump, which in turn is insulting to the people who voted for him.

More often than not, Democrat's go after Trump voters with personal attacks. It seems to be a fairly common strategy. And for this reason, when you make it personal, most people will immediately side with the person being attacked.

I wouldn't expect it over a long period of time, but it's an interesting effect.

No surprise. Violent protests are poison. I wish the Berkeley police had unmasked some of those black bloc anarchists and roughed them up.

I think that's been pretty evident in American history - look at how people reacted to the protests to Vietnam in the 60s? voted for Nixon, twice!

Of course it does. All they have succeed at doing is legitimizing the fortress mentality the American right has developed.

It's common sense that violent protests don't tend to help one's cause.

"Oh wow, really?" Jesus kids, it's like they haven't learned anything from American history. This ain't, I dunno, some country that's actually responsive to public grievance.

Yes. Trump may be good or bad, depending on your political views(Spoiler:he's bad) but violence is never acceptable. Free speech and participating in the civic process is great, get out there and make your voice heard, but be peaceful and respectful to the voices of others to. Only by reaching out to others, not attacking them, can you win.

Yes, because papers of record have limited space in which to cover the news, and generally speaking violent rioters smashing up shops and beating the sh**t out of other people is more newsworthy than a gaggle of peaceful protestors bumbling around aimlessly with a few poorly crafted placards.

What do you expect the 98% to do, self-police themselves to the point of snitching on anyone who knocks over a trash can?

indeed, and since they outnumber the violent ones by so much, they should probably do something about stopping the extreme minority from giving them a bad name.  Should be easy to do with those numbers.
