Picking the career apex before becoming President:

1. Vice-President
2. State governor
3. US Senator
4. top General or Admiral (5-star)
5. Mayor of a large city
6. Cabinet secretary (especially Defense or Treasury)
7. Director of the FBI, CIA, or some new secret police agency (if my fears of Donald Trump prove true)

Anyone who was already famous before.

A talk show host (high-brow, not Maury or Jerry), a news anchor, a foreign affairs correspondent, a well-respected journalist, a humanitarian.

Obviously they'd have to have fame, money, and strong name recognition.  An actor may not do very well unless it was someone that was an American icon, popular with both parties-- Tom Hanks, John Wayne could have ran and won, Bob Hope could have definitely won easily.

Could you imagine a President Glenn Beck LOL  Wink

I'd say in order: Journalist, Teacher, PR Specialist, Salesman, or even a scientist.

What do you think?
Someone actually in government administration.

As presidents: my brain says journalists or scientists.

As nominees: anyone in entertainment/public speaking fields. They would double as good presidents if they delegate the decision-making stuff to people who know what they're doing.

A wildcard idea that could do good at either would be a sports coach. Obviously some of them would be horrible at either role, but good media handling + name recognition = a good candidate, and leadership is a major quality in doing well after being elected.

Labor leader is the obvious answer here. Business and religious leaders shouldn't be in government.
Wasnt reagan a labor leader? for the actor guild?
