What if Bob Dole had defeated Bill Clinton in the 1996 Presidential Election? I think Al Gore would have still ran for President in 2000 but I think he probably would have lost to Bob Dole in this scenario. I think that since Bob Dole is a Neocon like GW Bush the Gulf War would have started in his second term after 9-11. I think GW Bush would have run for the GOP Nomination in 2004 against Vice President Jack Kemp  and Senator John McCain.

If Dole had won in 1996, the GOP would have kept the Senate and the House, and the 1998 midterms would have probably seen Gephardt as Speaker and Daschle as Senate Majority Leader.

Dole would have probably won reelection in 2000, unless Gore, or Clinton challenges him fiercely.

9/11 happens under a Dole-Kemp second term, it probably hurts Kemp in 2004, but the GOP wins a third term in '04 due to a lackluster Democratic field.

Kemp vs. Dean. Kemp wins in a landslide.

President Jack Kemp vs Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama in 2008 would have been interesting

True. Kemp may have beaten Hillary if the baggage was still there.

It would have been the status quo which is friendly to China most likely.

Thanks for the article,Bagelman. I'm for the US resuming relations with Taiwan since they're a democracy and I believe it was a mistake for Jimmy Carter to abandon them.

I think it would look something like this:
1997-2002: Bob Dole*/Jack Kemp
2002-2005: VP Jack Kemp/Governor Newt Gingrich
2005-2013: Governor Howard Dean/Senator Mary Landrieu
2013-2017: VP Mary Landrieu/Governor Gabrielle Giffords*
2017-?: Senator Condoleeza Rice(R-CA)/Governor Don Guardian(R-NJ)

*Bob Dole resigns after suffering two bouts of pneumonia after having an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
*NASA Administrator: 2005-2007; AZ Governor: 2011-2013

Are you aware Taiwan is claiming to be legitimate government of China? Recognizing it back would mean severing relations with the largest country in the world that owes a lot of American public debt.

Seems like a win-win to me.
