Again, this is why I think Amash is more likely than anyone else to actually run against Trump in the ’20 primaries.  He said last year that he’s likely to run for president one day, and he’s more critical of Trump than any other Republican in Congress.  I haven’t yet seen Rand Paul criticize the immigration ban from Muslim countries, for example (he may have done so and I simply missed it), but Amash is on Twitter today:

Looks like Sasse opposes it as well:

Oh, and another potential 2020 primary challenger (or possibly even 3rd party spoiler), Evan McMullin, who even quotes Cory Booker's response:

It might have been a little much to bar green card holders.

What a nerd response. "I oppose discrimination based on national origin...because there's a law against it. If you want change the law that'd be cool tho"

Sasse is probably DOA in 2020, Trump will be actively campaigning against whomever is primarying him.

Amash. Won't. Lose. His district was Cruz's second-best in the MI primary, and MI has a strong gerrymander without competitive House districts (unlike the weak ones in Texas and Pennsylvania).

People shouldn't have to be Syrian to be outraged by this.

Not in all likelyhood I meant more that people like him who are "I stand up to my party" get purged in midterms then hardcore supporters

I think you mean campaigning *for* whomever is primarying him.

In any case, if Sasse really has no chance at reelection, all the more reason for him to give up on another term for Senate and instead challenge Trump in the presidential primary.  Tongue

While most of the Congressional Republicans are trying to avoid the travel ban issue at all costs, Amash has been hammering Trump on the issue on Twitter.  E.g., Trump:

Yeah I thought he'd pull a Romney and try to kiss up and save face.

Sasse will be primaried in 2020 for his Senate seat; he may primary Trump to save face.

FFs.

Also, LOL at the people who think either of these two - or any other Republicans that criticize an already unpopular Trump - are going to be primaried.  A majority of Republican primary voters voted against Donald Trump, and while most would probably support allying with him on a majority of conservative causes and not giving in to Democrats in DC, it is hardly a death sentence to disagree with the President.

They're pretty much certain to get A primary challenge. The question is how successful it will be, and I think you're right in that it's not that certain. Amash might actually be safer since he already anticipates primary challenges a mile away since he's had to put away one before. Sasse is more conventionally Republican but was the beneficiary of populist outrage the first time he ran, so it'll be fascinating when the voter base turns around completely.

Re: Amash and other anti-Trump Republicans getting primary challengers....Jonathan Bernstein isn't convinced that they have much to fear from the wrath of Trump:

Of course, Trump as incumbent president in the 2018 cycle might be more threatening to these guys than Trump as GOP nominee in the 2016 cycle, and it's too early for 2018 primary challengers to have announced their candidacy, so this is probably premature.  Still, I think there's something to the point that Trump has a short attention span, and is vulnerable to falling for flattery even from someone who was insulting him last week.
