What the hell is wrong with you two?

We literally have a Duterte running one of the most important countries in the world. Obviously Silva or Alckmin would have been ideal, but Haddad was just fine.

A mere thought of Lula's return was so terrifying to the Brazilian "sensible, moderate establishment" they opened a door for a literal fascists.

Duterte is better than Bolsonaro. At least Duterte cares for the poor - he signed a free college bill last year, for example.  Bolsonaro is an elitist fascist.

Don't be a Duterte apologist. Just don't.

(But yes, Bolsonaro really is vile.)

I'm just noting that Duterte isn't as bad as Bolsonaro even if he's clearly unpleasant overall. Duterte is a mix of extreme bad and extreme good, with the bad outweighing the good. Bolsonaro is pretty much all extreme bad.

I think the fight against climate change was officially lost tonight. Bolsonaro will obliterate the entire Amazon, and it'll be impossible to even limit the damage of climate change without it.

It's typical for the loser to first concede or give a speech before the winner of an election shows up with victory comments. So far, we haven't seen any sign of Haddad, and Bolsonaro is now giving his written statement from home, surrounded by his wife, allies and the very capable sign-language interpreter.

Reactionaries around the world are speeding us towards a sort of global eco-fascism, defined by demonization of climate refugees, who were displaced as a result of the reckless deregulatory capitalist policies that they promoted.  It’s increasingly clear that, globally, we’re facing a choice between socialism and barbarism.

In the meantime, I hope marginalized people in Brazil and their allies do whatever is necessary to protect themselves from the fascists that are coming into power.

You do realize that your beloved socialists are why Rio is the rape and murder capital of the world, right? Or was that not "real socialism"?

Inevitable, but still not good. I suppose we have to hope that what happens next is at the better end of possibilities (i.e. that he governs as a democrat, that much of the rhetoric is just hot air etc, that, really, the future is just a continuation of the already pretty awful present rather than an escalation) but it's hard to feel confident about that.

Why are so many women voting for him?

PT is involved in what might be the biggest corruption scandal in South America or even the world when you look at the amount of money they robbed. This definitely doesn't help them.

Also, a lot of women simply don't care about what he said in the past, many care more about the problem of security for example and Bolsonaro has always talked about this issue.

Well, if corruption was the true problem, why didn't PT fall drastically and another leftist (say, Ciro Gomes) become the main left wing candidate?

Similarly, why didn't another more moderate right wing candidate (say, Alcmin or Amoedo) rise instead of the far right Bolsonaro?

Also, why was Lula leading in the pre election polls? Would Lula have won? Because he actually was found guilty of corruption.

An Alckmin-Gomes or Amoedo-Gomes runoff would have probably been a lot better I guess.

Anyway, there's a case that the biggest concern here isn't even with Bolsonaro, but with his running mate. Scary man.
