Pharmacucks.

I'm really disappointed in Tester, though.  I thought he was one of the good guys.

This reminds me of a forum that I recently read in the Boston Review, which is normally a publication I have mixed feelings on, about a compelling argument from Dean Baker, on whom I also normally have mixed feelings, that free trade in well-remunerated professions and things like drugs would benefit not only America but potentially also developing countries way more than free trade in consumer goods and protectionism in the professions has. It also points out how nefarious the eternal mission creep of ever-harsher copyright and patent laws that a lot of trade policy is larded with is.

Also Booker is a snake in the grass but we knew that already.

The two Dem Senators in my state fortunately supported the amendment.

Copied from Reddit

Here is what the rest received from Pharma only:

Bennett - $396k
Booker - $385k
Cantwell - Nothing under pharma but #3 contributor is "Lobbyists" with $446k
Carper - $225k
Casey - $470k
Coons - $229k
Donnelly - $245k
Heinrich - $150k
Heitkamp - $69k
Menendez - $296k
Murray - $477k (WA - Surprise!!!)
Tester - $135k
Warner - $168k

All of these guys get a good chunk of their campaign funding directly from pharma and thats not including lobbyists(could be anything I believe), Health services, health professionals, Insurance, and others that could all be in a position to lose with this amendment.

Just because the healthcare industry would lose on it doesn't mean those voting against it were bought. I would like to hear the arguments against it.

It seems pretty obvious they were bought off. What argument is there to vote against this other then we don't want to lower drug prices? Booker 2020 is dead even before it started.

Good question. Maybe someone who didn't decide that it must be perfect without thinking because it was said on the left could answer.

A spokesperson for Booker's office sent this statement to Jezebel, citing safety reasons:

"Any plan to allow the importation of prescription medications should also include consumer protections that ensure foreign drugs meet American safety standards. I opposed an amendment put forward last night that didn’t meet this test. The rising cost of medications is a life-and-death issue for millions of Americans, which is why I also voted for amendments last night that bring drug prices down and protect Medicare’s prescription drug benefit. I‎’m committed to finding solutions that allow for prescription drug importation with adequate safety standards."

Bernie tweeted -
@SenSanders
Why do Americans pay so much more than Canadians for prescription drugs? Because the pharmaceutical industry has bought the US Congress.

Al Franken (D-MI) was a co-sponsor with Bernie

21 USC 384: Importation of prescription drugs has many safety & other norms already including valid license, certification by Secretary in the US, blah blah.

This is beyond crazy & Booker & these cronies know they have no leg to stand on!

That stance has been criticized by reform advocates who point out that there is limited evidence supporting the idea that Canadian prescription drugs are less safe than those approved in America. What's more, the safety argument has been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry's lobbying arm, The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, which has claimed that "foreign governments will not ensure that prescription drugs entering the U.S. from abroad are safe and effective," as The Intercept reported Thursday.

Buddy you shouldn't be finding ways to agree with these corporate clowns. The trail leads to the money, the sooner you realize that the better off you will be.

The safety excuse is mostly a chimera, as most of the drugs that would be imported from Canada were originally manufactured in the United States; they’re just cheaper there, because the Canadian government uses a review board and price negotiation to make drugs more affordable.

An article from 2004 that told Americans how dangerous drugs from my home country Canada are...Shadow already posted before how this argument is crazy and only told by paid off politicians.

Ivanka Trump, the daughter of Republican real estate mogul Donald Trump, will host a fundraiser for Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s Senate bid next Wednesday, a campaign source familiar with the event said.

The event, with a suggested contribution of $5,200 per person, will be held at Ivanka Trump’s home on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

She and her husband, Jared Kushner, had bundled $41,000 for Booker’s Senate campaign as of May. Booker has raised raised $6.5 million so far this year.

The irony when Chuck Schumer seems to your left, of for that matter Cruz & Rand Paul etc.

@SenSchumer
Last night 46 Senators voted to bring prescription drug prices down. It’s a stance we share w/ the Pres-Elect yet the Senate GOP opposed it.

@SenSchumer
No denying the cost of prescriptions drugs, esp. EpiPens is too high and getting worse. I will keep fighting to bring the cost down.

If it's the "Bernie amendment", why is it called the Klobuchar amendment?

The media is calling it the "Bernie amendment". Basically it's being parried around as a litmus test as to whether you're actually a Democrat.

It's actually Klobuchar's. Franken is a co-sponsor. Any1 from Warren to Schumer to Brown to Merkley voted for it.

It is much less the Bernie amendment, it is the people's amendment supported by the millions & millions!

I love how someone with a maroon avatar is linking articles from the Heartland Institute to support her conviction that corporate New Democrats--who surely have our best interests at heart always!--must have some valid reason for voting for protectionism for an industry that gives them oodles of money.

The best part is activism works. You can really push back & people have to respond. I guess now Bernie has the spotlight in many ways & these things get highlighted.

Booker's Twitter was full of huge amount of self-gloating posts for testifying against Sessions including inspiring quotes pretending to cast him as a Freedom fighter or a revolutionary figure. Look @ this quote

@CoryBooker  Jan 11
"There comes a moment you have to decide: Do you keep quiet or do you stand up." ~Malala Yousafzai

Now he has to respond to this with negative publicity & the entire gloating on Sessions has gone down the drain.

.@LaurenLovesWI I unequivocally support drug imports to lower cost but plan must include protections so foreign drugs meet safety standards.

.@LaurenLovesWI I and some other Dems didn't believe ast night’s amendment met this test

‏@CoryBooker  8h8 hours ago
.@LaurenLovesWI We must find solutions that allow for prescription drug importation with adequate safety standards.

@CoryBooker  8h8 hours ago
.@LaurenLovesWI There's more we must do to lower costs that Pharma won't like. We need much more action than this. I will fight for this.

And the only one of those to vote for it probably would rather not give people a reason to mention his daughter again.
