Just watching the fourth session of House of Cards reminds me of that. What if a Democratic or Republican nominee would chose his or her spouse (who is political as well) as vice presidential nominee? If nominated, could such a ticket win an election?

I think it may happen under the right circumstances, but likely we will never find out. But it would be interesting, I think. I think it could work out well if elected, but only if the vice president accepts that the president makes the final decisions.

They'd have to live in different states somehow...

Or they could just live in the same state and forfeit that state's electoral votes (i.e. two democrats in SC)

Or live in a very small state where they don't need the electoral votes, but that would be taking a chance.

People would probably question why don't live together. Besides, Elizabeth Dole was given Hell for not actually living in North Carolina while Senator from North Carolina. The whole different states thing makes it rather difficult, overall. If you wanted immediate family on the same ticket, since people naturally move around, parent and child or siblings might work better.

Couldn't they just vote for a different Vice President?

I'd be more interested in seeing such a thing in Congress, or one person's the Senator, the other Governor.

That said, I can't imagine that being healthy.

The question is, can someone be Vice-President and First Lady at the same time?

FLOTUS is a ceremonial position that matters much less than VP.

I think it would be unwise politically. The public would likely regard this as nepotism. Probably as corrupt as well. There is a reason why presidents are prohibited to appoint family members to cabinet posts (since 1967). It may be that the law only applies to appointive office and not the vice presidency, but it would certainly be questionable on a moral standpoint.

The constitutional problem with the electoral votes of the home state is not the greatest difficulty. As far as I know, Claire Underwood is originally from TX, so she could just change her official address to that state while Frank remains in SC. And as far as I remember, didn’t Dick “the warmonger” Cheney also live in TX before the 2000 election? He changed his official residence back to WY just a few months in advance for that purpose. Another option would be when both candidates are living in a state, which is unlikely for them to carry. Two Democrats from AL for example, or two GOPers from CA.
