Corbyn talking point should be: In England I beat Brown from 2009, in Wales I beat Brown from 2008, and in Scotland ... well ... Brown is from Scotland you see ...

Peter Kellner, the elections expert and former YouGov president, has just told the BBC that the latest share of the vote figures suggest that the Conservatives are on course for their best result in local elections while they are in government since 1979. They could be doing even better than the Tories did during the local elections held at the time of the Falklands war, he says.

Quite a contrast to nearby Flintshire.

Rotherham wins the Greater Liverpool mayoral race with an impressive 59% of the vote in the first round, on the other hand the Tories came second with an absolute nobody who hardly campaigned.

Steve Rotheram (Lab) 171,167 (59.30%)
Tony Caldeira (C) 58,805 (20.37%)
Carl Cashman (LD) 19,751 (6.84%)
Tom Crone (Green) 14,094 (4.88%)
Paula Walters (UKIP) 11,946 (4.14%)
Roger Bannister (TUSC) 7,881 (2.73%)
Tabitha Morton (Women) 4,287 (1.49%)
Paul Breen (Jury) 729 (0.25%)

if you look closely you can see the Wirral seats going to the tories next month

Tory Andy Smith wins first round in the West Midlands race, now a run off with Labour's Sion Simon, I think Labour will edge it.

Andy Burnham looks to set to win Great Manchester in the first round with over 50%

In contrast to the county's lazy performance, the local press have been amazing with their election website:
