Thought Experiment:

Let's say sometime in the future, say in 30 years, just about every single demographic (by race, income, age, gender, orientation, religion, education, urban/rural, immigrant/citizen status, it's like this in every state, etc.) is perfectly split 50-50 between the Democrats and the Republicans. There's no third parties. Everything else in the country and the world is pretty normal. Trends say there are no more trends, it's already been this way for a while and there's no sign of a change.

How do the parties campaign, without demographics?

I'm a bit confused. If every demographic is split 50/50, wouldn't all elections be tied?

Say that all demographics vote the same.

It would mean the parties would have to talk about issues rather than pitting people against each other.

I'm trying to say: picture this, a world in which demographics are no indicator whatsoever of politics. How would politicians campaign without demographics?

How? On what?

Everything is tainted by demographics. Trying to appeal to the rich or the middle class or the poor, this race or that one, male voters, female voters, trans voters, college-educated or less, urban or suburban or rural, etc.

According to the 538 model, I believe democrats win this scenario in the electoral college (if I remember correctly)

Assuming all of that became irrelevant, people would still debate the environment, space colonization, liberty vs security, public health and other issues that are tainted by our current political coalitions.

Did that on 538's swing o matic with the set turnout remaining the same. In this scenario Trump would win the popular vote with 50.4% of the vote but Clinton would get 290 electoral votes with 49.6% of the popular vote.
