What I am referring to is the trend in which urban areas trend Democratic and rural areas trend Republican. These trends were especially pronounced this election with Clinton doing better than Obama did in many urban areas while completely collapsing in the rural areas of the country.

What can Democrats do to appeal to rural voters, and what can Republicans do to appeal to urban voters? What specific general election matchup could result in this happening?

Yes, but the Democrats need to actually start campaigning in rural areas rather than just accepting that they're gone. This would help a lot in places like Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Maine (especially the second district) since all those states have traditionally Democratic white rural areas that voted for Trump this time around. Meanwhile, Republicans would need to stop being seen as the party of bigotry (this could get easier once Trump is gone).

Its kind of hard to reverse 20+ years of these trends, but its possible, decades in the future most likely.
