Who's the most Liberal Democrat who could win in a Special Election?
The better question is, who is a Democrat that could win?
Richard Lindsey could win, but he's to the right of at least two Republican Senators.
Which two Republican senators are Lindsey to the right of, McCain and Collins?

Murkowski and Collins. Maybe even Heller, Flake, and Portman.

And that's - normal. Alabama is much more conservative then both Alaska (libertarianish) and Maine. Democratic candidate must also reflect that, and NOT have views which would be more suitable for candidate in San Francisco (if he/she wants to win of course). IMHO - a lot of electoral  problems with Democrats began when national party began to mold state one according to one national standard. After all - even hyperideologized Republicans are not afraid ro run Baker and Scott. If for victory a candidate of Jim Allen type is required, and such candidate - exist, why not?Huh? I would gladly vote Bobby Bright there, despite our very different views....

Of course anybody who wins this seat will be a worthless hack, of either party. The Deep South has its charms but the cretins they send to congress are not one of them.

If these "cretins" speak for majority of their citizens - what can you do? Most people there are very different from those in NYC, SF or most of the Europe..

Note: I'm not saying that because I ideologically disagree with them. I think a similar thing about most Hawaii congressmen.

Still - it's up to the people of these districts to decide. If they prefer "cretins" - so be it..

Bradley Byrne has the highest name recognition. I'm hoping he runs and loses his seat so I can convince someone I know involved with Alabama politics to run for his seat.

Looks like Strange is a contender.

Yes, he is. It's odd Gov. Bentley is actually considering a loon like Moore.

If Moore is that much of a loon, he either may not run for the 2018 election or will get clobbered in the GOP primary.

Could Moore actually make this seat winnable for Democrats if he doesn't lose a primary?

No Democrat is going to win a Senate race in Alabama. A Governor race maybe in the best of circumstances, but not a Senate race.

Moore could lose to Bobby Singleton or Richard Lindsey, both of whom are more conservative than at least a third of the GOP in their respective legislative branch. Singleton has a 58% and Lindsey has a 61% from the ACU.

I mean, Roy Moore is a literal Christofascist.  That's obviously something that should play well in Alabama, but having a suspended Supreme Court judge who's brought so much unwanted controversy to his state represent them in the Senate probably isn't something that even the people there would want.  A very conservative Democrat (Parker Griffith?) could make it a race.

Gov. Bentley interviews 11 people (including Roy Moore) for Sessions' seat.

Though he is not on this list, Alabama AG Luther Strange has already announced his intention to run in the 2018 special election.

I was really hoping Strange would be more interested in Governor, he just doesn't seem like a DC type to me.  I still think Roby would be the best replacement, but I understand that Bentley won't pick her.  Byrne would be another great pick, but no way Bentley is even considering him for the spot.

Of those in the list mentioned above, I really like Arthur Orr.

Poole is pretty moderate for Alabama, right?

I don't know. But Strange is a surprise, he's pretty old, so he won't be around for too long. This, combined with Shelby all but certain to retire in 2022 will be a big blow to Alabama, which currently has lots of seniority, which they heavily rely on for federal funds.

When Shelby retires, Strange will just start having to have pull. After that, I give him 10 more years. He'll have the rest of this term and then 2 in his own right.
