Okay, skipping to December in 3, 2, 1 . . .

Turn 2: December 1-7 1991

Interesting Developments on Campaign Trail

With hindsight over that last few months, it would appear the gloves came off in the announcement speeches. With each candidate having outlined their platforms, there have been some notable surprises.

The big surprises have been Governor Voinovich and Congressman Sanders. Both candidates have been gaining in the polls, with Voinovich beginning to emerge as a visible threat to Bush's renomination. Sanders' brand of 'Democratic socialism' appears to have taken hold in the northeast, as many opponents of the death penalty, disappointed in Governor Cuomo's decision to leave the death penalty to the states, flock to the Sanders base, while Voinovich has won support from those disappointed from Bush's promise not to raise taxes.

On the independent side, Trump, Gates and Paul have been making steady progress in their campaigns, with Trump scoring several notable endorsements this week, notably former District Attorney Rudy Giuliani of New York.

Minor Headlines:

Democrats:

Gov. Cuomo: Mario struggling to hold lead

Sen. Gore: Al emerging as moderate alternative to Cuomo

Fmr. Gov. Brown: Jerry Brown campaigns on libertarian agenda

Rep. Sanders: Sanders beginning to gain some ground

Republicans:

Pres. Bush: George Bush on defensive

Gov. Voinovich: Voinovich locked in for primary debate with Bush

Independent/3rd Party

Mr Trump: The Donald begins to gain on major parties

Rep. Paul: Is Ron abandoning the Republicans for good?

Mr Gates: Is Gates a viable alternative to the radicalism of Paul?

Endorsements & Debates

President George Bush: Former President Ronald Reagan; Former White House Director of Communications Pat Buchanan of Washington DC; Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole

Mr Donald Trump: Mr Ross Perot of Texas; Retired Admiral James Stockdale; Former District Attorney Rudy Giuliani

1st Democratic Primary Debate

Location: Iowa State University; Ames, Iowa.

Date: December 3, 1991

Sponsors: Cable News Network (CNN) and the Iowa Democratic Party

Invited: Governor Mario Cuomo of New York; Senator Al Gore of Tennessee; Former Governor Jerry Brown of California; Congressman Bernie Sanders of Vermont

Moderator: Wolf Blitzer

Questions:

General:

The Democratic Party has not won a Presidential Election since 1976. How do you plan to return the White House to your Party?

President Bush's approval ratings have been at record highs since the conclusion of the Gulf War. How do you expect to defeat a man with such support?

Will you all pledge to support the eventual nominee; regardless of who they may be?

Specific:

Governor Cuomo, in 1984 the Demcoratic Party nominated former Vice President Mondale and in 1988 they nominated Governor Michael Dukakis. These men were both noted liberals. How can a liberal reclaim the White House for the Democrats when the last Democratic victory in 1976 was won by Jimmy Carter, a moderate?

Senator Gore, going off of Governor Cuomo's question, how can a moderate such as yourself rally the traditionally liberal Democratic base?

Governor Brown, you have been described as simultaneously the most left-wing and most right-wing candidate in the race. Is this how you would describe yourself?

Congressman Sanders, how can a self-confessed socialist such as yourself hope to win a General Election when the country has moved in a more conservative direction under Reagan and Bush?

1st Republican Primary Debate

Location: University of Hawaii; Honolulu, Hawaii

Date: December 7, 1991

Sponsors: Wall Street Journal and Hawaii Republican Party

Invited: President George H. W. Bush; Governor George Voinovich of Ohio

Moderator: John Harwood

Questions:

General:

Today is the commemoration of 50 years since the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. Hawaii has a large Japanese-American community; and many feel that their efforts during World War 2 were overlooked due to racial discrimination. This question is in two parts. How will you honor and protect our veterans and how will you address the still-festering wounds of racism in this country?

The current Democratic field includes Congressman Bernie Sanders; an avowed socialist. Most people thought he would not gain much traction, but he is surging in New England and his policies seem to appeal to the younger generations. What does this say about the country today?

Finally, will you pledge to support the eventual nominee; no matter who it is?

Specific:

President Bush, during your time as Vice president, you were a noted critic of President Reagan's economic policy, notably referring to it as 'voodoo economics'. Do you still view trickle-down economics in this light or has your position changed?

Governor Voinovich, why have you challenged an uncumbent President from your own party in his bid for re-election?

1st Independent/3rd Party Debate

Location: Chicago Hilton; Chicago, Illinois

Date: December 5, 1991

Sponsor: Foundation for Free Campaigns and Elections

Invited: Mr Donald Trump of New York; Congressman Ron Paul of Texas; Mr Bill Gates of Washington

Moderator: Larry King

Questions:

General:

Do you believe that our current election system unfairly favors the Democratic and Republican Parties?

The North American Free Trade Agreement is slowly beginning to turn into a major issue. Do you support NAFTA or are you opposed to it?

Why have you decided to run as independents and third party candidates, rather than running in a major party primary?

Specific:

Mr Trump, you notably leveled heavy criticism against trickle-down economics in your platform. As President, would you push to repeal President Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans?

Congressman Paul, this is the second time in as many elections that you are running as a Libertarian. Have you, as a holder of federal office, finally turned your back on the Republican Party?

Mr Gates, you call yourself a 'classical liberal'. What exactly does this entail and how do you plan to enact your ideas in an increasingly partisan landscape?

December 2nd, 1991

Cuomo Goes to Iowa!

Iowa City, Iowa

It's a great day to be here at the University of Iowa! When I kicked off my campaign back in September, I made a promise to the students of America that your concerns would be the first order of business under my administration. I aim to keep it that way.

Many states have seen their funding cut under the Bush and Reagan years. And what happened? Tuition to attend public universities skyrocketed and became unaffordable for millions of Americans and their families. I intend to fix this within the first 100 days, by dedicating more funding to public education and giving our states the resources they need to fund public universities and colleges. The cuts of the Bush and Reagan years didn't result in a magic trick that made costs lower for students. You just ended up paying more.

Which is why I also intend to lower the rate of interests on any loans you may have taken out. I will establish a task force to help me develop a policy that will help you pay off your student loans quicker.

I am also going to dedicate more resources to the research and development, allowing for farmers and research universities to work hand in hand and create more jobs for millions of Americans by investing in the innovation our country has to offer. You are our future and I hope to secure a very bright tomorrow for the people and students of Iowa. Thank you and God bless this great state and the United States of America!

Well Wolf, our Party has had opportunities for growth over the past 12 years and we've unfortunately missed several key chances to grow our grassroots and our base. I deeply admire Governor Dukakis, but I think he didn't hit back against some of the attacks President Bush sent his way. That to me was a mistake. We've also left behind many hard working men and women in our manufacturing sector by ignoring their concerns and their declining wages. Some have only paid lip service to their problems. I intend to set forward a platform that will appeal to these and millions of other Americans, from all sides of the political spectrum. We won't compromise our ideals, but we're willing to work with moderates and even some conservatives to get this nation working again

Quote

In times of war, American rally around their President and their country and rightly so. We need to show solidarity in times of crisis when our leaders need support to make thoughtful and reasonable decisions. Now that the Gulf War has passed, however, more and more Americans are beginning to realize that the economy still hasn't recovered from the recession last year and millions are seeing their pocketbooks suffer as a result. President Bush will have to address their concerns very soon or his support will start to fall. If the past is any indication of his response, I think we're likely to see matters get worse.

Quote

Of course, Wolf. Our Party must be united this November and I intend to support our nominee wholeheartedly

Quote

Well Wolf, I am a moderate liberal, who will govern pragmatically and compromise when I need to. I want to present an effective response to the attacks of Republicans while also making an appeal to the workers of this nation who have felt left behind by the policies of Ronald Reagan and George Bush. I also realize that many Americans have grown wary of liberalism over the past 12 years. I intend to be a liberal in the tradition of John F Kennedy and lead in a way that addresses the concerns of all Americans.

Jerry Brown in Iowa

Cedar Falls, Iowa

First off, I would like to thank the faculty and staff of the University of Northern Iowa for having me here, and you students for your warm welcome. There is a lot of history in this place, and let me tell you, I was overjoyed when I heard you'd allow me to speak here. I look around and I see future businessmen, educators, public servants. Though now it may be hard to imagine a world beyond studying for tests, and late night parties, but it will come, the time when you all enter the world, ready to make your mark. To me, each of you ready to graduate, unburdened by student debt, and in an economy ready to take you in has to be one of my top priorities. That's why I intend to increase government support for scholarship aid. A Brown Presidency is one where a student's biggest worry is if they got that A they needed, or if the cute girl from down the block will say yes or no to that date, not whether or not they can even get to school without running in debt the rest of their lives.

I will be staying in the main lobby for an hour or two to take personal questions, I hope to hear from you all, thank you, and god bless.

"I think at that time. back in 1980, lot of bad luck, momentum was not on Carter's side, after than and things took their course, Americans were lead to believe that not only was it the republicans that made things better, but that they would stay great. But now people are, they're starting to see that maybe they're not all they are cracked up to be, and that the path we are going on under Bush is not sustainable. My message will invigorate the people, who now see the truth of Bush and Reagan's actions, and will express their passion with a vote for Jerry Brown.

December 2nd:

“Many people think that this campaign is all about breaking up the two-party-system that has dominated our political system for too long. And I admit that this is a very important issue in my platform. But people who criticize me for not having an opinion on other major issues that are facing America, social issues, how we deal with poverty and discrimination. But those people do simply not know where this corrupt and undemocratic two-party-system has lead to. While other economic superpowers are on the rise, our national debt has grown, our unemployment has grown, while the trust of the people, not just in our political institutions but in one another, is simply gone. The people in this country don't know if they have a job tomorrow, they don't know if they'll be able to feed their families, to pay their houses. The president is blaming the Congress the Congress is blaming the president, Democrats are blaming Republicans, Republicans are blaming Democrats. The political forces in our country are supposed to work together, not to divide our country. Only if the American people takes the courage to vote for a third-party and to let no party have a majority, our political elites will learn their lesson. It is okay to be angry. But it's not okay to just accept the situation the American people are sick and tired of. The government has done nothing for African-American suburbs, nothing for farmers, nothing for the common man. Be angry! It's time for outrage! And it's time to express your anger by going to the polls, and voting for the viable third option – Donald J. Trump!”

December 3rd:

- debate preparation
- participate in debate of independent candidates in Chicago, IL

December 4th:

- townhall event in Burbank, CA

December 6th:

December 7th:
- meet and greet in Santa Ana, CA
- speech at the University of California, San Diego, CA
- campaign through San Diego, CA

“Restoring our democracy, the ideals our founding fathers have fought for, that does not just mean getting rid of our unconstitutional political culture. It is also about giving chances to those who would be really capable of leading our country, but have no chances due to the mold of our political system. There are people in Congress who have never said a word during a debate, who have never spoken a word about their political platforms, about the issues they want to push forward, but who win their congressional district unopposed every two years, for generations. And then, there are young people like you. People who have ideals and ideas how to shape our country and improve the lives of the American people, but who have no chance to get elected because of old-fashioned and undemocratic political structures. Our political process is out of balance. It is not the person with the best ideas, it is the person with the biggest donors who wins in our political process. Only if we fight the influence of big companies on our greedy political elites, we are going to have a Congress that is full of qualified citizens, like it's supposed to be.”

Al Gore Intensifies Iowa Campaign
This week, Senator Gore intensified his campaign in Iowa. He is rapidly gaining momentum, something unsettling for Governor Cuomo, the frontrunner. Gore is only ten points behind in Iowa and Cuomo's position has weakened steadily since October. Furthermore, Gore was the first candidate to actively campaign in New Hampshire. He may not be the frontrunner currently, but keep an eye on Al Gore.

Well, the last election we won was by a moderate. There a lot of angry moderates and centrists in this country, and they need a candidate like them. I am that man.

This may be the case right now, but I think eventually it will wear off. President Bush has promised so much for this country, especially with the economy, and he has largely failed. If we can use this to our advantage and promise a better recovery and economy, we can certainly win.

Quote

Of course. We Democrats may have differences in opinion, but when the time comes to face off against President Bush, we must be a united front to win. And if this is so, we will win.

I may have moderate leanings, but anyone who looks closely can see I am a liberal. Look at my environmental policy, for example. I'll promise now to include many liberals and progressives in the Gore White House. I also want to note, that as I've said, most voters in America identify as moderates. We need this group of people to vote for us if we wish to win next year, and that is a fact. I don't know if Governor Cuomo, Governor Brown, or Representative Sanders can attract moderates. However, I have before, and I will again.

December 4:
Open regional campaign offices in downtown Des Moines
Door to door in West Des Moines
Build campaign infrastructure
Have fundraising dinner in Indianola

Donald Trump's Debate Answers

Q: Do you believe that our current election system unfairly favors the Democratic and Republican Parties?
A: Absolutely. You know, our electoral system that was designed to guarantee fair and square elections in a large country that was constantly expanding. But at least since the end of the 19th century, our electoral system is totally outdated. I was the first candidate on this stage to have the courage to call for an abolition of our electoral college system. It distorts the election result because it intimidates the people in this country to vote for a viable candidate who is neither a Democrat nor a Republican. They think they have to vote for someone who has the chance to win their state to let their vote count in the electoral college. If you have at least the most votes in a state, you win all its electoral votes. You don't even need a majority. All people in a state are represented by their electors. If the people really want to get their voices heard and make their votes count, they have to take the courage to vote for me, because when I'm president, I will make it a lot easier to have a wide range of candidates that represent every ideology in our political spectrum.

Q: The North American Free Trade Agreement is slowly beginning to turn into a major issue. Do you support NAFTA or are you opposed to it?

A: You know, NAFTA is a perfect example why our political process, the way we deal with political issues has to change dramatically. NAFTA is an agreement which was negotiated by our political elites in smoky back-rooms that might make sense on the paper, but the reality on the paper differs a lot from the reality in our country. In fact, the people in our country are worried about losing their jobs, and this is totally justified. I have a lot of friends that would benefit from this agreement. It wouldn't take them a week and they would already have moved their production site to Mexico or elsewhere where they get hardworking people making the jobs of American workers for one-tenth of their salary. Unemployment is going through the roof. I think in this situation, we should try to keep our jobs in the United States instead of expanding them around the world.

Q: Why have you decided to run as independents and third party candidates, rather than running in a major party primary?
A: I have decided to run as an independent candidate because I don't want to put a label on me. I do not want do abandon my beliefs because I have to serve a party I do not want to support. I want to serve my moral standards and not just a party platform. People know that Democrats are somehow liberal, Republicans are somehow conservative, but people see me on television and have to inform themselves about my stances. They read my pamphlets, they talk to my supporters, they go to my rallies, and they realize that there is a real third option in this election. We have to raise awareness to the fact that this country is not just blue and red, but a diverse nation that brings up greater minds than those we saw debating two days ago and those we are going to see debating on Saturday.

Q: Mr Trump, you notably leveled heavy criticism against trickle-down economics in your platform. As President, would you push to repeal President Reagan's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans?
A: Look, the people in this country, the working people, are not better off since Ronald Reagan became president. Our economy was good for a short period of time, but everyone who says that our economy is good at the moment is profoundly wrong. Not just me, but also our top economists say that the most important pillar of a functioning economy is the middle-class. The wealthiest Americans aren't the people who consume the most equivalently to their income, it's the middle-class that is producing our wealth. But the problem is: The middle-class in our country is collapsing. When I'm president, I will release the lowest 60% from their huge financial burden, while I am going to introduce a temporary limited tax for the wealthiest 30% to get rid of our national debt and to invest in this country, especially in our infrastructure, which will push our economy forward. My long-term goal is to introduce a flat tax, but it will be flexible, so that we are able to adjust it, depending on our economical situation and on the everyday reality of the people out there.

Q: How will you honor and protect our veterans and how will you address the still-festering wounds of racism in this country?

A:
Well Mr. Harwood, there is no concrete answer behind this answer. However, I for one am a proponent of the measures put in place by former presidents with regards to veterans. These men and women have sacrificed too much for the betterment of this nation, to just be cast aside by the current legislation. Veterans deserve far more than they have been given to this point, and as American citizens, it is our job to fight for the betterment of the these soldiers

Additionally Mr. Harwood, in no way will racism cease in as diverse of a nation as the United States. We simply cannot outlaw racist groups such as the Klan or the racist rhetoric held by politicians such as former Governor George Wallace, due to their First Amendment rights. However, at some point, the government can only do so much in the fight against racism, without the actions being deemed as failures, such as busing during the 60s. At some point, the citizens must take this issue into their own hands. Instead of creating groups in favor of your own race, like the Black Panthers or the Klan, you must attempt to reforge or completely create new racial relations. Look at Cleveland, prior to my time as mayor, the city was far too divided. After my policies, racial relations improved, but only after the citizens themselves took the issue into their own hands in order to reform Cleveland, not as groups of people, but as a united front.

Q: The current Democratic field includes Congressman Bernie Sanders; an avowed socialist. Most people thought he would not gain much traction, but he is surging in New England and his policies seem to appeal to the younger generations. What does this say about the country today?

A:
There is no reason that we, as citizens or politicians, should fear the success that Congressman Sanders has. In all honesty, his success shows that the younger generations are changing in views that have been held by older generations. This also shows that the country is searching for ways to answer the issues that are plaguing this nation. Additionally, there is little fear behind the rhetoric held by Congressman Sanders, for if he was as radical of a socialist that the media makes him out to be, he wouldn't be involved in American politics for the past 11 years.

Q: Finally, will you pledge to support the eventual nominee; no matter who it is?

A:
Why of course I would support President Bush if he were to become the nominee of the Republican party. There is no reason to create friction amongst the Republican Party in the upcoming election if I were to not support President Bush. As a major party, our job is to insure that we win the Presidency. From there, compromises within the party can be made in order to make a more streamlined ideology to better benefit the American public

Q: Governor Voinovich, why have you challenged an uncumbent President from your own party in his bid for re-election?

A:
I am challenging President Bush due to him changing too much on his views, as well as his aggressive stances on war for the past 4 years. President Bush, despite attempting to resemble President Reagan, has only created for a more divided nation. Furthermore, the GOP has started to isolate our younger generations and resorted to only appealing to only the most hardline conservatives. Finally, our economy is in shambles, and due to my reforms to the City of Cleveland, I can comfortably say that I can fix America and make it the powerhouse that it rightfully should be.

Before I post my shedule, I have a question.

In the 1992 cycle, the libertarian convention happened in August of 1991. Did Ron Paul win, or is the convention taking place on a different date?

I  . . . didn’t  know that. We'll say that Ron Paul won the Convention, but 2ith some thinking that he's turning into the Adlai Stevenson of the Libertarian Party.

Rep. Bernie Sanders Debate Answers:

Q: The Democratic Party has not won a Presidential Election since 1976. How do you plan to return the White House to your Party?

A: "I can turn out the same people who voted for Reagan and Bush, me and them share the same values. I am, I can safely say, not a millionare like the others on this stage. I am not an establishment hack, I will only pander to the will of the American People. They will realize that in November when... hold on let me borrow a phrase... "Make America Great Again".

Q: President Bush's approval ratings have been at record highs since the conclusion of the Gulf War. How do you expect to defeat a man with such support?

A: "As soon as this "war high" disappears, the voters will realize the economy is in bad shape, my policies will restore this economy, it will make the poor earn money. It's not an absurd idea that someone who works two jobs each with eight hour shifts should still be in poverty. We will beat Bush."

Q: Will you all pledge to support the eventual nominee; regardless of who they may be?

A: "If they prove themselves to be against corporatism, of course I will, but look at the polls. Our movement is surging, this country is craving for, and needs an outsider. I believe we have a decent chance of winning."

Q: Congressman Sanders, how can a self-confessed socialist such as yourself hope to win a General Election when the country has moved in a more conservative direction under Reagan and Bush?

A: "That question has a very easy answer. This country has just not prospered under conservative leadership. Well, the middle class has not.... I can turn out middle class voters in record numbers, I've been a friend of the blue collar, "Reagan democrats" for a long while. They've voted for me, as mayor and Representative. Also your title of socialist, with all do respect is misleading. I am a progressive, a strong devout liberal who believes this economy should work for all. It's not a "socialist" idea that the rich should pay their fair share. It's common sense."

BILL GATES: DEBATE NIGHT

Do you believe that our current election system unfairly favors the Democratic and Republican Parties?

Yes, I believe it does. First of all, even the Commission of Presidential Debates is bipartisan. They'll do everything they can to get someone that is not a Republican or a Democrat off that stage. Second, when was the last time someone who was not a R or a D won the Presidency? It was 1848. George Washington warned us about what would happen with a two-party system, and it looks like what he said has came true.

The North American Free Trade Agreement is slowly beginning to turn into a major issue. Do you support NAFTA or are you opposed to it?

Free Trade is really helpful for our country, it helps our economy, and the country we are trading with's economy. It will benefit us, Mexico, and Canada. We should keep it, as it is a really good deal.

Why have you decided to run as independents and third party candidates, rather than running in a major party primary?

Well, I am tired of the status-quo. The two party system is ruining America. We have the Republicans and the Democrats wanting to kill each other. They are putting party over country, and it is something that must end. So that is why I am running, I wish to end the status-quo, and the gridlock in Washington.

Mr Gates, you call yourself a 'classical liberal'. What exactly does this entail and how do you plan to enact your ideas in an increasingly partisan landscape?

My policies and my views are the best of both parties. I am fiscally conservative, sociably liberal. That means I wish to have a smaller government, where the federal government doesn't give a hell about what you do, as long as you follow the law. As I am an independent, it is easier for me to compromise with both parties, better of all, I have policies that I believe most of congress agrees with. So yes, if I am elected, we will end gridlock in Washington.

In that case, we'll say Browne won the VP nomination on the 4th ballot despite a tough challenge from Nancy Lord.

Answers to questions:
-Yes, the two party system does it's best to silence our message for the sole purpose of staying in power. The people deserve more than two choices, I'm here to present more choices.
-The problem with these so called free trade agreements is that they aren't promoting free trade. It's controlling it. Let's try freedom instead of government oversight, it worked for the founding fathers.
-I like what the libertarian party is trying to do, build a movement, and that movement is a movement of freedom. I want to be a part of that.
-I didn't turn my back on the Republican Party, they turned their back on me. They promise these promises, that they'll push forward change. Then we get more of the same. I'm done with the status quo, the GOP isn't.

Okay, I need to throw something out here. Simossad already know what I'm about to say because I told him in a PM.

Recently, my girlfriend of 6 years and fiance of 3 weeks was killed by a drunk driver. As you can imagine, it's hit me pretty hard.

I won't be updating this game for a few more hours at least to attend her funeral. Sorry guys.
