Turn 5: December 22-28 1991

Ted Kennedy Weighs in on Race for the White House

This week, in an interview with Time Magazine, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) decided to weigh in on the 1992 race.

"It's definitely an important one for Democrats to win." Said the veteran Massachusetts Senator. Kennedy lambasted Bush and Gates in the interview, in particular their tax plans.

"Bush and Gates are two sides of the same coin. Oh sure, they might be more to the left socially than Reagan, but they still follow the same failed philosophy of trickle-down economics that does nothing but harm the middle class." Moreover, Kennedy slammed Bush for "being completely out of touch with the American people."

When asked about the Democrats, Kennedy had some kinder words to say, but still refused to hold back on Governor Brown's proposed flat tax

"It's a stupid idea," said the Senator "it's a Republican idea transplanted into the Democratic Party. It's from the same school of economic theory that Reagan graduated from."

When asked about Congressman Sanders though, Kennedy had nothing but praise for Vermont's sole Congressman.

"I think Sanders has some very good ideas; ideas we need to consider. The only thing standing in his way is his lack of experience."

When asked if he was going to make a late entry, Kennedy said no, stating that the time to enter the race had long passed, and that he was focusing on his role as a Senator. This invalidates earlier chatter about Kennedy possibly taking one final shot at the White House

Notes:

Okay, so we finally have a new round going. Iowa isn't that far away, so make sure you have built up your infrastructure in that state.

As we proceed onward, major headlines like the one above will occur from time ti time. Prominent figures from both parties as well as prominent independents will give their thoughts on the race. This can give hints as to who they may be more favourable to and who they may endorse. THese can be great opportunities to gain powerful endorsements.

Filing for the Maine Caucuses ends this turn. As we are approaching the end of 1991, no further contest filing will occur this year, but will open on January 2nd.

There will be at least one more debate before Iowa.

Maine Caucus ballot:

Former Governor Jerry Brown

Senator Al Gore

Representative Bernie Sanders

A trial run of sorts.

Yeh, y'all can move on without me for now.

All President Bush is doing is working on ground game in swing states and meeting with local organizers, but his main focus is the nation and it's preservation. He's going back between D.C. and the stump every other day.

Turn 6: December 29 1991-January 4 1992

Trump Withdraws From Race

This week's story was the withdrawal from the Presidential race. Trump, a billionaire businessman, formally announced he was ending his campaign outside the entrance to New York's Trump Tower.

In his statement, Trump did not endorse any candidate, but rather quite heavily rebuked Bill Gates, a fellow independent candidate, for an ad that Gates aired not that long ago featuring a woman who alleged that Trump had sexually assaulted her. Regarding this, New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau is keeping this case under wraps.

Trump also bitterly denounced the current political system, calling it utterly corrupt and bruising for everyone involved.

Trump's withdrawal has shaken up the field somewhat. Before, Trump was considered to be the strongest independent candidate in the race, now, it would seem that independents and third party members are evenly split between Gates and Libertarian nominee Ron Paul.

As for the Democrats, it appears that Gore and Cuomo are entering almost a two-way race, with the New York Governor consolidating in the north, while Gore attempts to shore up his base in the south. In addition, Jerry Brown seems to be building a base in the west, while Sanders' populist message appears to be carrying well in the midwestern states such as Michigan and Ohio.

Meanwhile, rumors are circulating that Bush will not renominate Quayle for Vice President, owing to the fact that Quayle has been seen as a liability to the President's chances of re-election. Indeed, reports from inside the White House say that Secretary of State James Baker has been pushing for Quayle's replacement on the ticket. Regardless, Bush will have to make a decision soon.

Minor headlines:

Democrats:

Gov. Cuomo: Cuomo under attack from both center and left

Sen. Gore: Gore draws level in New Hampshire

Fmr. Gov. Brown: Brown firming up lead in California

Rep. Sanders: Sanders on verge of breakthrough in New Hampshire?

Republicans:

Pres. Bush: Will Bush replace Quayle?

Independent/Third Party:

Gates: Trump slams Gates in withdrawal speech.

Paul: Can Paul capitalize on Trump's withdrawal?

Nationwide polls:

Democrats:

Gov. Cuomo: 37.7 %

Sen. Gore: 31.6%

Fmr. Gov. Brown: 25%

Rep. Sanders: 5.7%

Independent/Third Party

Mr Gates: 37.8%

Rep. Paul: 37.5%

Undecided: 24.7%

Statewide polls:

Iowa Democrats:

Gov. Cuomo: 39.3%

Sen. Gore: 30%

Fmr. Gov. Brown: 25.2%

Rep. Sanders: 5.6%

New Hampshire Democrats:

Gov. Cuomo: 34.8%

Sen. Gore: 34.8%

Rep. Sanders: 16.4%

Fmr. Gov. Brown: 14%

Endorsements and Debates

Endorsements:

Democrats:

Senator Gore: Iowa Congressman Neal Smith; Tennessee Congressman Jim Cooper; Iowa Congressman David Nagle; Maryland Congressman Kweisi Mfume; Former Governor Rose Mofford of Arizona

Governor Cuomo: Speaker of the House Tom Foley; Former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill; House Majority Whip David E. Bonior; Former Governor and 1988 Democratic Presidential Nominee Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts; Governor Barbara Roberts of Oregon

Debates:

2nd Democratic Primary Debate

Location: Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Cambridge, Massachusetts

Date: January 3, 1992

Sponsors: Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and Massachusetts Democratic Party.

Invited: Governor Mario Cuomo of New York; Senator Al Gore of Tennessee; Former Governor Jerry Brown of California; Congressman Bernie Sanders of Vermont

Moderator: Jim Lehrer

Questions:

General:

At the last independent and third party debate, the candidates were asked about the North American Free Trade Agreement. Where do you stand on NAFTA?

The ongoing investigation against Donald Trump over a television advertisement released by the Gates campaign has caused no small measure of controversy. Do you believe that Gates exercised poor judgement in airing this ad, or do you think that the ad was aired deliberately to sabotage Mr Trump's campaign and force his withdrawal?

Finally, Massachusetts is home to your party's 1988 nominee, Governor Michael Dukakis. Some say that he was too liberal to win the election that year, but some say that the campaign was simply managed poorly. What is your opinion?

Specific:

Governor Cuomo, recently your campaign has faltered somewhat and you are now tied with Senator Gore in New Hampshire. How do you plan to regain your lead?

Senator Gore, many said you could only hope to consolidate your base in the south to counter Cuomo's advantage in the north, yet you have drawn level with the Governor in New Hampshire. In your opinion, why has this happened and how do you plan to continue your aggressive strategy in the north?

Governor Brown, last week Senator Ted Kennedy, who is also of this state, lambasted your tax plan. Would you like to take this opportunity to respond?

Congressman Sanders, in the same interview, Senator Kennedy said that you had ideas that the Democratic Party should take on board. Indeed your message appears to be resonating across the industrial states. Do you believe that your so-called "political revolution" will continue to surge?

2nd Independent/Third Party Debate

Location: Capitol Plaza & Convention Center; Montpelier, Vermont

Date: January 4, 1992

Sponsors: Liberty Union Party and the American Broadcasting Company

Invited: Mr Bill Gates of Washington; Congressman Ron Paul of Texas

Moderator: Ann Compton

Questions:

General:

Vermont is home to Congressman Bernie Sanders, an avowed socialist who previously served as Mayor of Burlington for eight years. Do you believe that some of Sanders' ideas deserve to be at least considered?

The withdrawal of Donald Trump has affected you both in the polls, but also left a large amount of undecided voters who are registered as third party members or independents. How do you plan to appeal to these people who supported Mr Trump?

Both of you are largely campaigning on similar platforms of social liberalism and fiscal conservatism. How do you plan to set yourselves apart from each other given your similar platforms?

Specific:

Mr Gates, there has been speculation that your recent television advertisement may have prompted Mr Trump's withdrawal from the race. Indeed, many people view the ad as a cynical attempt to play on voters' fears. Do you have any connection to the ad at all personally?

Congressman Paul, there have been rumblings inside the Libertarian Party that you are turning into their version of Adlai Stevenson, the two-time Democratic nominee in 1952 and 1956. How do you plan to avoid this comparison?

I do support NAFTA, and that is because that it greatly expands the U.S.' position in the global economy because of the elimination of tariffs. Not only would this increase trade, but it would assist with the economic recovery. It would also help the economies of third-world countries by enabling them to compete and trade on a global level. Yes, there are negatives, but the positives certainly outweigh those negatives.

I think Mr. Gates probably exercised poor judgement. I wish he hadn't done this, Mr. Trump's campaign was bringing new people into the political arena. I think, though, that this shows that it may be worth taking a closer look at Mr. Gate'a campaign. A mistake like this has major impacts on an election, and I think it shows a huge problem with his campaign. We can all agree here on this stage that none of the Democratic candidate would ever dare to release an ad like this. If you want a unified field, look away from the third party and independent candidates and come to us. We are more positive and unified than them, at least. I think that should be a major selling point to those voters disillusioned by conflict in politics.

I think we would have lost that election no matter who the nominee was. That election, if you look at the numbers, was largely a referendum on Reagan's policies. He was viewed favorably, so Bush won. Now, Bush has nothing to run on but his own record. This year, I think that Dukakis could beat Bush. It just wasn't the Governor's year, and I respect and support him.

I think this has happened because my vision of America simply resonates across the entire country. The south may be my stomping grounds, but my campaign is a national one, not a regional one. So yes, of course I intend to continue my northern strategy, because I intend to win this contest with the support of voters nationwide.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The people who will benefit from NAFTA will be the CEOs in their tall towers as they count their money while those below them suffer. The loss of Tariffs will flood the market with cheap goods, and jobs will be sent elsewhere due to rising costs. I support helping 3rd world countries, but not at the cost of weakening our own economy. As President I would ether renegotiate, or failing that, reject it.

It's simple really, if a crime had truly been committed, she should of reached out to law enforcement. Instead, she went to an independent candidate who showed poor judgement and a chance to undermined his competition. I disagree with Senator Gore on a number of issues, but he is right when he said that none of us here would ever send out an ad like the one Gates used.

Reagan told the nation that Bush would be his successor, that, combined with Dukakis's campaign unable, or unwilling to fight back against Bush's attacks, made Bush the likely winner from the start. But now Bush has to run with his own record, one that won't hold up with the American people come November.

Look, lets make one thing clear, I have nothing but respect for the Kennedy family, with it a legacy of some of the greatest public servants this nation has ever had. But for Ted to attack my tax plan like that is disappointing to say the least. This is not something I came up with at the drop of a hat. I worked with a number of economists to draft this plan, we went through the options, and found that this was the best for the American people. Our Tax system is broken and bloated, with a flat tax, we can cut our tax code in half, removing loopholes, contradictions, and unnecessary fat that hinder the men and women of this Nation.

*Host post debate meet and greet in Cambridge to talk with attendees of the debate.

Jan 4th:
*Mostly work on bureaucratic business, making calls and meeting with Campaign Team for weekly update.
