Let's suppose Donald Trump narrowly wins the White House, and sets about consolidating his hold over our institutions -including our 'fourth estate', the media- like Victor Orban, Recep Erdogan, and Vladimir Putin have already done with theirs.

Do think our media is worth saving from such a fate?

The fourth estate is already dead; there's hardly anything left to save at this point.

We are the media. Freedom of the press just means we have the right to reproduce thoughts and ideas in tangible mediums. As long as we have that right and a freeish internet, there will always be a media. It just may not be as consolidated or powerful as current TV and print media.

Print Media, of course.

The Televised Debacle that is seen by millions every night, should be shot.

The principle of a free press is worth saving. The actual news industry, particularly cable news, is not.

Anti-trust provisions should be invoked against the Big Six media corporations.

that'd make things worse i.m.o.. the problem with modern mass media is that the profit motive (or even the "don't go bankrupt" motive Tongue) outweighs the media's traditional responsibility to report the news accurately and in depth. and smaller outlets are much more vulnerable to this.

There's literally nothing worse in this world than cable "news." Whether it's Fox, CNN, or MSNBC (hell Fox is the most entertaining of the three just because the insanity spouted on there is hilarious). Newspapers are the only form of worthwhile media left, and they are doing just fine especially when digital editions of the newspapers are taken into account. Literally 90% of the news I get comes from the New York Times' Facebook page + them and other newspapers' websites. TV news channels deserve to die a slow, painful death in my humble opinion. Independent YouTubers who can manage to gain and keep a large following are most likely the future of news as the old standard bearers of video news on cable start to die.

Yes, but I would like to see the 24-hour news networks die out.

That is the first idea that has popped into my head. The laws are worth saving, though. We have reached a time when no amount of change will save us and instead we must change ourselves.

Where will the media be in 10 or 20 years time if it isn't "saved"?

The media we have now? No. They're worse than useless from the perspective of net public good or promoting democracy.

The idea and exercise a free press generally is absolutely worth defending. But I don't think saving the "mass/mainstream media" would accomplish that end.
