States where Obama did better among non college whites than college whites

Although Obama lost both the college and non college white vote in most states, he generally did slightly better among college whites than non college whites. The Midwest is an exception to this pattern, except Iowa and Missouri. Whites with advanced degrees and whites lacking a high school diploma were more democratic than the average whites in most states, although Romney still won these groups in many states.
This is the percentage Obama got among whites in the states where he did better among non college than college whites according to the Upshot Demographic Tool.

Industrialization/Unionization? Hardly explains the strip from Kansas through the Dakotas though.

I think in the plains states it is more that republicans do exceptionally well among college whites whereas in the more industrialized states it is reflective of a strong democratic performance among non college whites. In Indiana, the wealthy educated counties are the most consistently republican. My home county of Hendricks has voted for every republican candidate since Wilkie. I always found it strange when I first started looking at this forum that educated whites were looked upon as a democratic group.
