Since the Speaker selection process takes, at minimum, multiple days to complete, I will do what I did in March to declare an interim Speaker, while we elect the Speaker for the September-October 2020 term. This will ensure that the official business of the House does not abruptly stop for 3 days while we attend to our duties here. So consider this an official decree from the Dean of the House, me, that SevenEleven shall be interim Speaker of the House until this Speaker selection is completed.

I nominate SevenEleven for election as speaker.

I will accept the nomination.

If elected Speaker, I will keep everything organized and up to date, including legislation threat titles, seek out a deputy to ensure smooth operations for the full term, and do my best to open all votes between 12:00 and 12:30 AM Eastern so everything is easier to keep track of.

Nominating myself for speaker.

The one quality a speaker absolutely needs if they are to preside effectively is activity. I think I’ve shown through my actions over the past Congress both here and on the AFE board that I will be able to maintain the required standard of activity, with all that that entails, including keeping a strict schedule for bill introductions and votes, updating the noticeboard daily, keeping you all updated through PMs and DMs, and streamlining the passage of bills between houses.

The Speakership shouldn't be a partisan job for this reason – partisanship impedes their effectiveness and the efficiency of the legislature as a whole. I would hope as well that we decide on a Speaker based on their dedication rather than through partisan considerations, and if elected my first action will certainly be to appoint a deputy speaker with as high a commitment to activity and to the good of Congress as I have. Whatever the outcome of this vote, I wish Sev and Laki well and am sure they and all the rest of my fellow representatives will likewise hold themselves to the best standard that our legislature deserves.

I change my vote to 1. Joseph Cao. Why? I don't have the experience to be speaker for now. I believe Cao is a better fit than me and it's not decided because of partisan lines, but just someone who can make the house rule effectively with the needed experience and activity. Something i can't offer yet. I'm open to learning and will serve as a deputy speaker instead. The speaker election isn't necessarily a win for either party. It just needs to be someone who can get the job done. I apologize for putting up my candidacy.

The rules are a little unclear so I was planning to wait for Razze to close the vote. However, after a re-read, it seems I do have the authority to do this. Since there is a clear consensus, I don't foresee any issues here.

48 hours having passed, the voting period is now over.

Joseph Cao: Joseph Cao, Jessica, Spark, Beeman, Laki
SevenEleven: SevenEleven, FalterinArc, Gracile, Razze
Laki: none

By a vote of 5-4, Representative Joseph Cao is duly elected as Speaker of the House.

Congratulations, Mr. Cao. I'm confident that the House will be in good hands and I look forward to a productive session!

Thank you, Mr. Acting Speaker. My thanks to you and the Dean for keeping the House running while this election proceeded, and may we all have a productive Congress filled with reasoned and amicable debate.

Let's hope this goes better than the last time we had a House Speaker from Illinois.

*bangs gavel* Back to business!
